excellent interchangable lens camcorder
I've used it with Sony e-mount lenses and Canon FD lenses (they allow me to manually set the aperture). The quality of video is just amazing. Thank you Sony for creating such an amazing product.
My first priority on the wish list of improvements is Manual Focus assist. You have it on your Nex-5 camera, which I also bought, so why wouldn't you place it here? This might be just a firmware update, but your biggest challenge would be which button to use for it. From usability point of view it ought to be the same as nex-5's but it's already taken on nex-vg10.
My next priority on the wish list of improvements are ND filters. I don't think they are mechanical on pmw-ex* family of camcorders so this might be able to be slipped in into another firmware update.
I'm dealing with lack of XLR inputs by using separate audio recorder for my interview audio tracks when I do my documentary work. Note that lack of XLR inputs will not prevent me from doing my work. This might have to wait for a hardware revision (I hope there's a body-only, without the lens, option at that time).
Overall despite the wishes that I listed above, I love your product.

Takes some getting used to- Great pictures after
I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 so I was sceptical about the accompany software PMB manager. I used many multimedia managers before but PMB is truly a class above the rest, it really accentuates this beautiful instrument well when porting your files to the computer (as well as organizing your existing files.
As an amature astronomer, I've always challenged my cameras to star and moon shots as a test of low light capability and F/shutter options. I hope my upload works for this review, I think you may agree- this camera can.
As stated in the title, unless you are using the $500.00 accessory flash (which makes taking bad flash pictures impossible), the automatic settings are not always the best, many trial photos have come out grainy even in good light, but once I get used to manual settings, same condition photos come out great now!
The Sony menu items and options have not changed much from the previous Sony models I've owned (since they produced the floppy disk camera), so getting adjusted to where options are placed was a quick learn for me, there's just many more options now.
I recommend you accessorize, buy the Sony xx58 model flash, the high output battery and ND/polorizers etc. for different lighting scenes. Restated: instead of 2k, spend 3k, you will be glad you did.
One tick off for design just because the thing's so heavy, you need a mono/tripod for any long shoot. The solid state capture is nice and file transfer is fast as can be. If you're spending this money, you have a nice computer that can too.
Vast array of Emount (and A if you go that route) lenses make this a good choice for flexible options camera.

Want to buy the VG10, but it lacks key features
I?m posting this here out of frustration, hoping someone will notice and forward to the head of product development for the NEX division.
I currently own an HDR-CX550V, and desperately need to upgrade to better camera. The HDR-CX550V takes fairly good video, but has way too small a lens, so as a result it can?t be used for low-light applications such as time-lapse astrophotograhy. Also, the still-camera functions in the CX550V are sorely lacking, even compared to a low-end offering such as the DSC-H50, which I also own.
I need ONE camera that does it all. The NEX-VG10 comes close, but I cannot buy it because it lacks key features ? all of which are available separately on the CX550V and the DSC-H50:
* GPS
* Power Zoom
* Manually adjustable external MIC gain
* A screen the swivels 180 degrees for self-portraits and ?Survivorman?-style documentaries
* Ability to take ?intervalometer? style timed stills. (For example, I want to leave it all night taking one 30-sec exposure after another of the night sky)
* Touch screen controls
* A CMOS sensor that will never overheat
* RAW mode on stills
* Fast auto-focus
I?ve even looked at the NEX-FS100, but despite the $6.5K price tag, it also lacks key features, such as the ability to take stills with higher resolution than 3.6 megapixles!
Over the years I?ve been continuously frustrated by Sony?s apparently deliberate crippling of cameras.
Sony ? please hear us ? WE WILL PAY MORE if you just give us what we need!
I can?t buy the VG10 ? not at $2K, or $6K, or even $300.00, because it is crippled. I would pay WAAAAY more than list if it just did what I need! It is bizarre that the VG10 does not have the basic features of the CX550V.
Sony, are you listening? I?m not the only person who is frustrated!
