Dynamic Range Optimizer:

The D-Range (Dynamic Range) Optimizer function adjusts the exposure and contrast of an image to counter the effects of high-contrast shooting condition, allowing for a great shot. The D-Range Optimizer suppresses “blackout” in dark areas such as shadows and “whiteout” in bright areas such as skies. As a result, the captured image appears as natural as the original scene.

This is a great camera This camera is amazing. I've done weddings, travel, photos riding an AmTrak train, macro images. The firewire allows me to simply copy the video clips to an external hard drive and/or my comuter video files. You may need to purchase software that "read" the HD mts clips. Photos have stunning clarity. Very pleased. wish it was on sale when I purchased it. April 25, 2011

Possibly worth it. Have "grown up" on Sony: from TRV900 through to XDCam. Budget restraints forced this purchase, and the picture quality and ease of use has blown away client & DoP respectively. Virtually a point & shoot camera when on auto settings, it has passable low lux capture as well. Given Apple's Final Cut Pro updated codecs, the footage is converted straight off of the camera through "Batch Capture" in fcp 2 upwards (many thanks to Wade at TVNZ for pointing this out, saving me numerous hours on TOAST conversions). Drawbacks are nit-picky given it is a consumer level camera, but display seems very flimsy given everything operates off of the touch screen, and an external audio source is required to avoid recording noise from camera. Given the camera was purchased only days before it travelled overseas and was used on a 10 day shoot, all involved with the project it was purchased for are very happy with the footage it has provided. next gen camera Another learning curve that makes you ask if going HD is worth it.. SONY is bent on territorialism.. Even using Vegus software, I am unable to capture from this cam to a new DELL XPS Desktop..Frustrating January 8, 2011

Excellent Camcorder for Regular use I have had this camcorder for almost 1 week now, and really love it. It takes clear crip videos and plays back instantly on my TV with the HDMI connection. I can press a button to start copying the files on my camcorder to any recording device. i bought this camcorder on sale during Boxing week and got a good discount, i purchased the handbag with accessories that gave me an extra bigger battery, HDMI cable for %50 discount, which is really an excellent deal from Sony retail store. Zooming is not the greatest but you can change the setting to get upto 120x digital zooming. If there are any left in the market i suggest go get it you will not regret the purchase. January 5, 2011

2. This camera captures high definition footage in the AVCHD format. High Definition AVCHD discs can be created using standard DVD media, the supplied software and a compatible PC. DVD media containing AVCHD footage may be played on a compatible Blu-ray Disc™ player/recorder, PC with supplied software or PlayStation®3 devices.
