Hope it's better after . . . after cutting out a hole in the cabinet to fit this, it was connected and unfortunately got error codes 8000 and 8003 when loading more than one DVD; rental slot work twice, though, and video quality was grainy and poor. It is off to be fixed after two days of ownership, so hoping it comes back all better! January 5, 2011
AV Integrator's Review on new purchase The options to manage a few hundred bluRay discs are not great even these days. Either a Media Server and Manager or this unit. The painful procedure of copying discs one by one onto a computer is not my cup of tea so i decided over this unit. The picture quality is amazing, nice crisp images, beautiful contrast just superb.Disc loading and recognition is surprisingly fast, playback time is greatly reduced. The interface however need some serious work. It is not pleasing to the eye. The crossbar that worked great on PS3 and PSP is not for a $2000 unit. It is not at all intuitive or user friendly. The Metadata is extremely small and there are no options to change how its displayed. When you load 400 BluRays into the unit to go from the 1st disc to the last it is a nightmare to do so one by one. When its connected to a large screen TV (55"-65") there are a lot of wasted space due to the interface. It could be filled up nicely with cover art to make it user friendly and easy to operate as opposed to the tiny crossbar interface. I am very disappointed about this, it is virtually impossible to recommend this unit for friends or to customers that are asking for a solution to manage their media collection. However there is a solution by adding a media manager to this unit to over ride the clutter and the clumsiness of it all. Given that you want to spend an extra $2000 on top of the $2000 that you spent already. I am trusting SONY to come up with a solution in the next software upgrade. If they are in need of ideas just check out other consoles for an easily controllable, user friendly interface.They were pushed out of the high end TV market by the Koreans already and soon someone will make a better Changer with a better interface and no one will purchase an OK SONY unit at that time that is a lot more inferior and maybe a little bit more expensive. Just don't get the idea behind it. Give the customers what they are asking for to stay in the game. If you can't just get out right now, step aside and give way to the future of media management. Because no matter what SONY thinks about the cross bar interface user's just don't like it. October 3, 2010
New Purchase Its a great machine and has potential. Would like the dvd art a little bigger, would like to see some sort of netflix or amazon streaming on this. I am weighting on returning it since I just bought it and I contacted tech support and they do not have any indication that it will support 3d with a firmware upgrade. Far Exceeds Expectations It does not bear repeating but my Blue Ray changer appears to be bug free and the video quality, both Blue Ray and upscaled DVD is breathtaking. WIth the improved sound, this is a noticable improvement over the 777ES I owned with an Escient sytem. With Escient out out business, I would recommend looking into third party solutions that are now plentiful to round out this unit and add a lot of high tech options like a robust user interface, easy fixing or creation of metada (I fix and create my metadata from my home office computer for instance) To learn what alot of experienced owers think, I suggest reading the AVS forum thread on this unit to be an informed buyer. I have posted some screen shots of the improved third part interface as well http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18467734#post18467734. I would start on the last page and work back to the begiining as there are 44 pages currently. I really appreciate Sony stepping up and supporting the Blue Ray format, this is a spectacular piece of equipment and can be made into an awesome home theater system with the right third party add ons.
