Glad I researched, and I love it! I conducted my own research before choosing Sony?s reader over Amazon?s Kindle and other electronic readers. I haven?t been disappointed with my choice. Here are the key reasons why I chose my Sony reader: 1) With Sony, I don?t have to buy books from just Sony. Because they chose an open standard, I can purchase electronic books from several places, I can get them for free from Google, and I can check out electronic books for free from public libraries (that?s pretty cool). 2) In the future, when I buy my next reader, if I pick Sony or another open ebook, I?ll be able to move my old books over. But not with Kindle, my choice is Amazon or bust (where?s the freedom of choice?). Haven?t we learned not to create and feed a monopoly? 3) Sony has a touch screen and pen based input, Amazon doesn?t. I?ve read enough comments to know that many customers don?t like the keypad feature on the Amazon to take notes. I love the notes feature on my Sony reader! 4) I have a preference for a reader with some personality (I got to pick my favorite color, but others are available). And the custom covers look great! 5) Sony makes electronics. Amazon doesn?t. I have purchased Sony products before, and I trust them to make something durable and easy to use that they stand behind. I?ve seen the Kindle and I think it feels flimsy. 6) Sony has technical support, if I need help, if something breaks, Sony has people who will pick up the phone and talk to me. Sony has retail stores, their own and others, with people who can assist me. Just like Sony, Amazon may let you return it, but who can you talk or walk to if you have a problem that you want fixed or just need a little demonstration? Sony is there for me. In the end, my reader has lived up to the hype. I love it! October 30, 2009
Nice Reader - Except for Screen Clarity When comparing readers, I chose the Sony for its touch-screen technology, size/weight, and display. All the readers I compared has E-ink display. (see Borders.com for comparison chart). I am disappointed when I see the crystal clear images on their Kindle, compared with the glare and rather dull images on the Sony. It is very hard on the eyes except for when you are in the sun! I am happy with it otherwise, but being able to see what you're reading w/out straining is a major concern.?; October 13, 2010
Reconcideration . . . When i first saw the sony reader on the internet, i fell in love, and when i got to open my reader, its like i fell in love again, then i go to charge it and turn it on, still in love, then i go to read my very first book, and i couldnt read it. The reflection of the lights around you is hard sometimes to read. And i can live with that, its not a deal-breaker. I have learned to get used to it, and after a couple of weeks, i was back in love. Great Product, but i wish it was easier to download content, like there should be no "Daily Edition", it should be wireless for all, and an internet browser would be nice. Anyway, this is going on for too long, but all in all, great device. October 5, 2010
Low contrast screen and slow cpu So I saw all the nice pictures in Sony's website ad I thought the screen was really nice. When the reader arrived not only I was disappointed by its low contrast grey screen that glares a lot, but also by it's slow cpu. It turned out all the images in sony's website are ultra post processed to look as if the background was more clear than it really is. Despite it's supposed compatibility it only works with plain text files. Anything with pictures and formatted text is completely unusable. When zooming in the format and pictures are usually lost, resulting in broken sentences and words. I could live with all it's flaws if at least the screen looked nice, but it doesn't. Comparing with a paper book in any lighting situation results in being overly disappointed with this device. August 6, 2010
