Worst LCD I have ever purchased
I had this TV less than 2 years and it now will only turn on to a black screen. Worked great for less than a year then developed MAJOR problems with the picture. Have heard many of these tv's have the same problem. There was a call for action special done on these TV's. DONT BUY ONE if you want the TV to last. Own 2 samsung TV's for same period of time and have had no problems!

My first (and last) Sony TV. Picture quality is clearly mediocre, nothing like it looked in the store. Sony customer service is mediocre, no help.
If you want to view videos from your camera, this TV does not accept AVI or MOV formats. A clear disadvantage to camera enthusiasts.
No more Sony products for me.

Don't buy without warranty
I bought a 52" KDL-XBR9, similar to this model and after 4 weeks it developed a huge white vertical stripe right in the center of the picture. As it was a closeout I got a good deal and because it was a Sony I assumed it would be of high quality. Sony customer service has een less than cooperative, here it is a week since the stripe developed and still no resolution. Buyer beware

One fantastic LCD
Sony has produced a great LCD TV. The Triluminous technology is a clear step forward for LCD picture quality. The unfortunate result is a great TV at a price point that many people will not be able to afford. Even now 18 months after introduction this set is still selling new above the price points of the two succeeding XBR (9 & 10) models.
During my shopping efforts I had the opportunity to view this LCD side-by-side with a competing plasma and was convinced that the XBR8 can achieve black levels on par with "reference" plasmas. For those tech enthusiasts out there, I dropped in a HD video benchmark Blu-ray disc and to my surprise the test patterns were at ideal levels/setting out of the box when picture was set to "Cinema". If you want to tweak any of the picture settings, you will find a plethora of video adjustment options in the settings menu. This should provide the flexibility to accommodate the needs of even the most discerning viewers.
The HDMI CEC connectivity (which Sony has branded BRAVIA Sync), is a convenient feature that enables you to network your HDMI devices together. Mostly it avoids having to individually power on each device or fiddle with input settings when going from TV to Blu-ray.
The only real drawback is the limited on-line internet functionality. Having a TIVOHD in my system provides an alternative to access online content (Netflix, Youtube, etc.) that the XBR8 otherwise wouldn't.
For those who can get their hands on one of these units and afford the price you will be pleased with this LCD.
