3LCD Chips

The 3LCD technology at the heart of Sony’s Grand WEGA™ televisions provide a bright picture, with high detail and natural color. These three key benefits are immediately apparent when viewing a Grand WEGA™ TV. You can expect to see an incredibly detailed picture with eye-popping colors. Sony uses three tiny LCD chips (0.73”) with a combined resolution of over 2.76 million pixels. The light from a high output UHP lamp shines into a filtering system that splits the beam into red, green, and blue light streams. Each color goes through its own LCD chip, which passes or blocks the light. The three beams are then instantaneously recombined and sent to the projection lens.

HDMI™ (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and PC Connectivity

Designed for maximum versatility, Sony’s Grand WEGA™ line is equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with digital audio to provide matchless image and sound reproduction. PC connectivity is also accommodated via HDMI so now you can use your Grand WEGA TV with your PC.

Advanced Iris Function

The Advanced Iris function is a special Sony function designed to improve contrast expression especially in darker scenes. The Advanced Iris function is enabled by using either one of two modes - Auto and Manual. The Auto Mode has two settings designed to work best with video content such as movies that vary between bright scenes and dark scenes. Auto 1 is for programs that have a wide range of brightness from scene to scene. Auto 2 is for programs that have less variation between brightness levels from scene to scene. The Manual mode is used to help deliver optimum contrast levels under different room lighting conditions. The High mode offers maximum screen brightness and works well when a room is brightly lit. The Medium mode is for average levels of light. And the Low mode offers the maximum amount of contrast and works best under low light conditions. The key benefits are deep blacks and improved brightness and overall contrast.

WEGA Engine™ System

The WEGA Engine™ system is the core video processing system that was designed based on Sony’s expertise and long heritage in bringing cutting-edge picture quality to TVs for consumers. Its fully digital signal-processing path includes video processing functions that have been designed and optimized using Sony’s video experience to improve overall picture quality. The WEGA Engine™ includes:> High-speed A/D (analog-to-digital) converters for wide-range gradation capture of analog signals > 3-D Y/C Comb Filter for minimizing cross color and dot structure artifacts > Digital MPEG Noise Reduction Circuit, which reduces MPEG artifacts such as “block noise” and mosquito noise” caused by the compression used to maximize bandwidth in digital broadcasts > Digital Temporal 3-D Noise Reduction (pixel-by-pixel basis) > Digital Motion Adaptive I/P (interlace-to-progressive), as well as Edge Adaptive I/P deinterlacing conversion, which improves resolution in video with motion

never go smaller I have had this tv for over 3 yrs now and I had the message pop up saying lamp needed to be replaced and I just told the tv that it was replaced and a yr later its still going strong with a good picture, but I have notice that I have a discoloration at the top of my screen, so now I really have to replace the lamp. But I will never go to a smaller tv in my living room and for sure never play my games on a smaller screen. love it, and as always sony delivers on another great tv. The one I had before was a sony 27 inch tv with 13 channel select that was from the 80's and it still works with a good picture as well. October 2, 2010
Awesome 3LCD TV whats will all the whining, hey this TV is Great...I brought this tv in Feb. 2006 and I have had a awesome picture untill July' 2009 is when I get a message saying Lamp is near its life..ordered a new lamp and the picture is still the same: Outstanding!! like a new Tv all over again.... so please stop your crying, when you are not at home, turn the tv off and stop letting the tv watch you when you are asleep..5 star for sony3LCD Wega. KDF-55E2000 REVIEW I dont know what all the crying is about...I bought this TV new in January '07 and havent had 1 problem with it yet. Picture is awesome with HD channels. Analog...not so great, but who is gonna spend this kind of money on a TV and not invest in HD reception? The only complaint i have is that you have all this viewing area and it doesnt have PIP or split screen. Other than that, i love this unit. June 17, 2009
It's ok Burns lamps up from 1st year to second, also the lamps run from 125$ to 200$ depending on if you just by the lamp or the housing with it. Sony has put there mark up on the lamps also, this tells me it's not about the customer, but profit. After forking over 1500 for the tv itself, the customer service should of been there. As with all large companies it seems, once you make your purchase they just dont care.. there are places out there that has the original osram lamp for your tv, so search around and dont give into overly marked up lamps June 14, 2009
