2.1 Megapixel (Gross) ClearVid™ CMOS Sensor

1/3" ClearVid CMOS Sensor provides stunning detail and clarity with exceptional video (1080 lines of resolution - HD Mode or 530 lines of horizontal resolution - SD Mode) and still image performance (4.0 Megapixel). Unlike traditional CCD Imagers, CMOS Sensors require less power, providing better battery performance.

Real-Time HD Codec Engine

Sony developed a Real Time MPEG Encode/Decode system with reduced energy consumption and compact size to fit inside a personal camcorder. This engine provides efficient MPEG2 compression, and recording and playback of clear HD images at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that High Definition video can be recorded on the same MiniDV cassettes as are used for SD recording.

2.7" Wide (16:9) Hybrid Touch Panel Clear Photo LCD plus™ Display (211K Pixels)

The 2.7" Wide (16:9) LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with imporoved resoltuion. The 211K pixel LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback, and the widescreen format makes shooting in 16:9 mode and composing shots even easier.

Dual Record

While recording video in High Definition you have the ability to capture a 2.3 Megapixel still image directly to Memory Stick Duo™ media.

Cinematic Mode

Perfect for creating your own movie masterpieces, the HDR-HC3 Cinematic mode lends 24 frame film-like effect to your recordings.

Active Interface Shoe

Provides a location directly on the camcorder on which to add optional accessories while providing power and two-way communication to those accessories.

Fader Effect(s)

Enhance your personal videos by adding professional looking fader effects. Choose from Black, Mosaic, Monotone, and White.

InfoLITHIUM® Battery with AccuPower™ Meter System1

Charge the battery at anytime because unlike NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries, Sony's rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries are not subjected to a life shortening "Memory Effect". Sony's exclusive AccuPower™ meter displays the battery time remaining in minutes, in either the viewfinder or on the LCD screen.

Switchable HDV/DV Format Recording

The HDR-HC3 is capable of recording and playing back both High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) video recorded on a standard MiniDV cassette.

Professional Quality Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T Lens

Carl Zeiss lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating that offers less glare and flare with increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation and perfectg renditions of subtle tones. The additional T coating on the lens further reduces unwanted glare and flare.

Digital Still Memory Mode with Memory Stick Duo™ Media3

Capture still images up to 2304x1728 resolution, directly onto Memory Stick Duo™ Media for easy trasfer to PCs for emailing, printing or shairing with other compatible Memory Stick™ devices.

Super SteadyShot® Image Stabilization System

Picture stabilization system that uses motion sensors to detect and compensate for camera "shake" without compromising picture quality like some other digital stabilization systems.

Tele Macro Function

Useful for shooting close up shots, but without having the camcorder casting a shadow on the subject. Images shot in the Tele Macro Mode will have the subject properly focused with the background unfocussed so that the subject stands out.

Super NightShot® Infrared System

With Sony's NightShot® infrared system, capture video in total darkeness (0 lux) up to 10 feet away. Super NightShot mode automatically adjusts the shutter speed to increase picture brightness and clarity. Color Slow Shutter mode allows you to record in low light situations with full color detail by slowing down the shutter speed.

Picture Effects

Get creative when recording or playing back your videos with Sony's Picture Effect Modes. Effects available in Camera mode: Monotone, Mosaic, Negative Art, Pastel, Sepia, Skin Tone and Solarize. Effects available in Playback mode: Monotone, Mosaic, Negative Art, Pastel, Sepia, Skin Tone and Solarize.

HDV Recording Format

From the innovators in camcorder technology, Sony’s HDR-HC3 camcorder is the industry's smallest and lightest HDV1080i consumer level camcorder and player (as of February 1, 2006). Now you can record all your memories in true high-definition video.

10X Optical / 80XDigital Zoom

The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, the Digital Zoom Interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zoom.

Smooth Slow Record

By increasing the record rate from 60 fields per second (fps) to 240 fps for 3 seconds allowing you to capture 3 seconds of fast motion and play the video back in 12 seconds. This is great for analyzing a golf swing or a viewing a bird inflight.

Assignable Dial

Built into the lens body of the camera, the assignable dial can be used not only for focus or exposure, but may also be customized by the user to control Auto Exposure (AE) Shift, Exposure, Focus and White Balance (WB) Shift. In playback mode it allows you to control the volume.

i.LINK® Interface (IEEE1394)2

A high speed bi-directional digital video/audio communication between two compatible devices equipped with an IEEE1394 interface, including camcorders, digital VCRs, and PCs.

Built-in Intelligent Flash

For added clarity and detail when taking pictures in low-light situations, the built-in flash improves pictures and reduces shadows.

Program AE (Auto Exposure) Modes

Program AE modes make recording easy even when filming in challenging situations. Choose from Beach & Ski, Landscape, Portrait, Spotlight, and Sunset & Moon.

Great camera with a fatal flaw What is the point of paying retail for a Sony product (ANY product, actually) with a built-in flaw which ultimately prevents you from using the product? Google the term "Error Code C:31:23", or "Whack a Sony" to learn about a tape transport problem endemic to a whole generation of Sony's Mini-DV camcorders. Then, consider buying a this-generation hard drive cam (either from Sony, or a competing manufacturer who has not sold you an expensive flop, then failed to make that transaction right). Absolutely perfect for Mac - made for Mac. This camera is built to use with Mac OSX. Obviously you need to buy, and it will cost you as much as five dollars, the correct cable which is (obviously) a 4 to 9 pin firewire cable. (The camera has a 4 pin firewire socket, and Macs have a 9 pin firewire socket. Thus ......... you need a 4/9 cable!) 4/9 firewire cables are commonly available in every shop and every web site and cost about four dollars. Indeed, every camera made has a 4 pin firewire socket, and every computer has a 9-pin firewire socket - so you will need one of these for every camera and computer combination. Plug it in to your Mac, launch iMovie and everything is automatic. The ONLY disadvantage of this camera is simply that newer cameras, have digital storage (on an SD card) rather than storage on "old fashioned" tapes. Unfortunately most more modern cameras have digital image stabilisation ... which is comedy laughable. only optical stabilisation works -- and this magnificent camera has it. One of Sony's truly great products. September 2, 2010
Good for shoting Documentaries I got my cam for a few hundred bucks from a friend that no longer used his. I love how compact it is and how easy to use it is. I use a tripod or a handpod to capture my shots. It's small enough where when your doing an interview people tend to forget the cam is there. August 9, 2010
Great Camera this is a historical review since I have had this cam for 5y now. Bought it to take video at my sons 1st birthday and I was not disappointed. I have used it on many long trips carry along 15 mini DV tape with me. in summry: pro: 1st 1080i handicam, great video and audio cons: WIDE ANGLE LENS: this cam needed a wider angle lens on the low end which is 41mm(35mm eq) Sonys solution is to add the wide angle attachement and this works as long as you do not want to zoom to tele with the attachment on. Also when shooting you have to plan when you need to add/remove the attachement and then you have to carry a case to have it available. For general shooting get a cam with at least a (35mm eq) 28-30mm wide angle lens. I really wished I had had a 28mm lens when I was at the Forbidden City to capture the fantastic panarama views. MENUS: are a little confusing but after a year or so I got used to them. TIME TO GET VIDEO OFF CAM: Using Sony Vegas works great for controlling how you want to get the video off the cam but it is time consuming. 15 full tapes means 15-20 hours to just capture the video into m2t/avi pc format. STILL PIC QUALITY: this cam still pics look good in bright light but deteriorates in low (natural) light as it becomes grainy. My inexpensive canon & sony digital cam takes much better still pics. The five star rating I gave this cam must be taken in context to the time it became available and the revolutionary capability it offered in 2005. At this time (May 2010) I am retiring my HC3 and moving to a flash ram video cam. I have not decided on a replacement yet yet but I have been very happy with Sony HC3's quality, performance, reliability over the past 4 years as It helped me generate about 150 hours of HD video with NO issues.
