The XBM-style desktop is OK and familiar. I use this mainly as a media player for digital files on a NAS box and, so far, it struggles with only a few .avi files, so I use .mp4s as much as possible. The biggest problem with modern players is that we can't hook up to our old speaker sets! This will be a huge problem for a lot of people. This is important, and it sucks! Right now, we are stuck with TV speaker quality sound. So far, there have been no other problems or surprises. It plays discs OK. There have been a few updates, but SONY doesn't tell us what is in them, so I have no idea what they fixed, added or changed, etc. Would I buy this again? Yes, and I probably will get a second one.

width spec incorrect
on the sony site the width is listed as 11.4"
When I went to install it, it was 14.1 wide. Too wide to fit the space allowed.

Pretty good disc player
This has been a pretty good disc player. Easy to use if you have patience to wait for it. A few times it has locked up, requiring me to disconnect it from the electrical outlet to reset it. Also the closed-captioning feature does not work when using Hulu-Plus. This is not a defect, Hulu told me their technology doesn't allow Sony Blu-Ray players to use closed-captioning. Otherwise it has been good.

I recently purchased this unit and I'm pretty happy with it. It supports all of the major streaming services. I've used Netflix + Hulu + Amazon Instant Video with no problems at all. I've also used the DLNA implementation streaming content off of my Mac with Serviio. The "Super Wi-Fi" implementation delivers a very strong signal on the other side of the house with my Airport Extreme access point. In fact, it is stronger than every device I have with the exception of a Mac Mini in the same room as the access point.
I was prompted to complete a firmware update when I first installed the unit and it completed with no problems. I have a very simple setup (2.0 audio to a Vizio 34" LCD panel) and no complaints at all.
From what I read, this unit is Energy Star compliant and draws less than 0.1 watts in standby, which is awesome!
This is a solid replacement for the Apple TV I was using to stream NetFlix and random movies via iTunes. I haven't tried the SideView app yet.
