Best Notebook I've Owned
I bought the customized version of the 14" with the intel core i5 processor, 320 gb HDD, DVD Drive (instead of BluRay), & standard battery.
I am VERY impressed. I'm coming from a notebook that has a 2008-gen intel core2duo and a fan that just wouldn't stop (HP). This made the battery last about 3 to 4 hours even with the extended battery that sticks out of the bottom. Today was my first full day's use of my new vaio and I got a total of about 10 hours off and on use with it (but mostly on)! It was a LOT more than I expected.
The screen is a lot brighter than my last computer's screen as well, but it's not like apple's screens or anything, but still very nice. The trackpad could be larger and centered on the chasis, but overall it is very responsive and feels great. The drivers work fine, there is pinch to zoom in and out, horizontal and vertical side-scrolling (no two finger that I know of, maybe it's a setting somewhere?) and sony boasts there are more gestures, but I haven't found them yet.
The keyboard is pretty great too, it's not backlit, but is island styled like a mac, and is very comfortable and fast to type on. In fact, I'm using it right now! :). A little loud though (makes it a bit awkward to type in class sometimes.) Also, I would have liked to see the f1 to f12 keys have special functions without holding the function keys (or at least have the option to change it in the bios) but it doesn't.
The worst thing about the computer is the build in speakers. I really didn't even realize a laptop could have such weak speakers, LITERALLY my cell phone (HTC EVO) sounds about the same in terms of loudness. But it's definitely not a dealbreaker, as somehow the specific frequency of the speakers make them still sound very clear.
As far as design goes, I actually bought this computer based almost completely on how good it looks. MAN! It lives up to its pictures online. I got the black, but I'm sure the other ones look nice in person too.
the computer boots in about 35 seconds, 50 seconds to get to a fully functional desktop. I just tried the quick web boot, and it took 25 seconds. Pretty snappy. ummm. I think that's about all I can think of right now.
I was going to give it only 4 stars on the reliability part is because the screen flickers on and off a bit when shutting the computer down, and when booting it up, or when installing a program or whatever, but I think this might just be a microsoft windows thing.. Because Microsoft sucks. Other than that It's great.
