Overprice
first I didn't bought it here at sony.com because it's too expensive and second it's just a piece of glass which sucks because I have the 300mm and the 55mm lens and all I can see in front of the Optical Viewfinder is the lens unconformable to use it's a big let down from Sony to us the fans. I buy anything that's from Sony as long is useful to my needs unfortunately I'm not happy about it and I return it back.

viewfinder
thing is that nex cameras are sold at very good prices for their quality, everyone can afford a nex 3 or nex 5, but as it was written on dpreview 16mm lens which comes in the cheapest kit option is rather for people that know what they're doing, to wide for family photos...
this viewfinder for 16mm lens is also made for people that know what they are doing
for me its great, i don't have to see my hand, camera and buttons i just see the shot i'm going to make.
most people don't know it, some might not remember,
on any rangefinder camera for lenses less than 28mm you have to put on a separate viefinder like this one
and in it you wont see if exposure and focus are ok,
you wont see exactly the frame(this viewfinder has a nice option - line which marks frame end when doing closeups)
i have rangefinder leica 3, leica m6, contax g2, voigtlander bessa l and some russian zorkas and viewfinders on them perform just as this one or worse, voigtlander viewfinder for 15mm lens is almost the same size and look and it's also around 200$, so for me the price isn't too high, it just has to be like this.(i've got it with 25% disscount in sony store)
it seems to be expensive, you can buy nex-3 body or wide adapter for 16mm lens for this 200$
but it will work great for photojournalism, street photography, maybe weddings and sometimes family photos
it could have display for aperture, shutter and focus inside or just red arrows - underexposed overexposed like in m6 and green led dot for focus confirmation
but now as it is nex with it is the smallest and the best rangefinder-like camera ever and it made me stop dreaming about digital leica m, it also made me stop dreaming about canon 5d mk2 (i own 5d mk1 but now i dont need movie recording option in it)
so
buy
if you know what you want to do with it

Buyer beware
Unfortunately, Sony doesn't adequately disclose that this only works with the 16mm lens. Most shooting with the NEX is with the 18 to 55 or 18 to 200. If I realized that I would not have purchased one. And again, Sony seems to build a good product but over prices the accessories.

If you don't like it, just return it!
Both of the other reviews are right. It is nothing but an eyepiece that wworks only with the 16mm lens. But if I knew more about photography I would have been able to discern that form the product description. ONly problem with that is, if I knew enough about photography to be able to discern this, I probably would be buying a more sophisticated camera than a Nex3. once you get the eyepiece, the expanded directions that come with it say very specifically that it only works with the 16mm. Its only one sentence, but its an important one and Sony should include it in the specs on the website, and not make an amateur like me figure it out. On the upside, though, the reviewer who panned this product, need not have wasted all of his purchase price. I just called Sony, and they made arrangements with me to return the product for a full refund. They did not give me one second's arguement. They just gave me a return number, and return instructions, and as soon as they got it back, they posted a refund to my cc. This specific product may not be right for everybody, but for overall customer service, you can't beat Sony.
