very convenient and well designed
Very handy little recording unit. The only thing to keep in mind is that it outputs in a .m2t video format to the card. if you are using final cut pro it won't read these files unless you install the FCP plug-in included on the installation disk that comes with the unit. from there just go to "File>log and transfer" and insert the files and convert them. other than that side-stepping, i am very pleased with my purchase. I use two 16GB CF cards and they work great. also very conveniently fits on the back of the HVR-Z5U camcorder right over the battery. definitely worth the money. much more convenient and easy-to-use than tape when it comes to transferring.

A must have for Z5U owners
This device changes the way you record, and it makes the transition so easy! I'm accustomed to recording on tape and even with this unit I still do at times, but when I stick a 32gb CF card in it, I really don't need to use tape at all. Of course if I ever had the need to record for several hours, I can record between tape and CF so that I never miss a thing.
It's small and fits cleanly over the battery on the Z5 unit and looks like it belongs on the camera. And because it integrates so well with the Z5, I can see most of my actions on the view finder and can control it with the camera controls. When it comes to play back, it works very well and I can repeat the same or all clips over again. One of my favorite parts is if I'm recording something that is unpredictable like lighting, It has a mode where it will continue to record an then rewrite over the oldest file when the memory card is full. That way you can keep filming until you actually do catch something on tape and you won't be wasting tape!
My only issue is that it's hard to find a memory card over 16gb that is fast enough for this product. I would like to see more options like this available in the near future.
