GIANT HOLE THIS IS MY FOURTH WIRED REMOTE FROM SONY, THEY USUALLY LAST ABOUT 1-2 YEARS. I HAVE ACCEPTED THIS BUT THIS LATEST ONE REALLY TAKES THE CAKE. PREVIOUS MODELS WERE SURFACE MOUNT, NOW I HAVE TO CUT A THREE INCH HOLE IN THE BACK OF MY BOAT BECAUSE THEY CHANGED THE DESIGN!!!!! THIS IS CRAZY, MAYBE THE NEXT ONE WILL BE OVAL SHAPED AND I WILL HAVE TO REPAIR THE HOLE AND MAKE A DIFFERENT ONE, THAT SHOULD COST ABOUT A GRAND. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT. March 24, 2011
Very frustrating user experience I bought this remote to use in my 33 foot boat. Radio head unit is in the cabin so I did not need a marine head unit but I did need a marine remote. My main goal was to get Ipod control including complete ipod menu navigation while at the helm. It is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to tell from Sony's user manuals, marketing literature etc for ANY of their car/marine head units if they will output Ipod menu information to an attached wired remote. I bought what I thought was their latest head unit, a CDX-GT630UI, and after a very frustrating install I was extremely dissapointed to see "USB" as the only useful text on the remote LCD. NO ipod menu!! Some other complaints: 1) cables are too short. 2) The remote requires two seperate cables, one a proprietary sony cable, the other a standard 3.5mm stereo connector 3) the proprietary sony cable is either a Sony BUS or Unilink cable, depending on what you read. Whats the difference? Who knows, sony does not say. Best I can tell there is none. After much hunting I found an extension cable. 4) after an hour on the phone with Sony it became clear that there was NO sony product that they could say for sure could display an Ipod menu on the RMX-60M/R or any other sony wired remote. Bottom line - if you want ipod menus while you are at the helm, Sony has no viable option. March 16, 2010
Blinded by the light I spent a lot of energy installing this remote on my helm of my 31 footer. The cables are only 18', which in my experience, are too short for most applications. I spent over an hour on the phone with support before they could determine that there is no extension cord available. So I spliced some more wire in to get it done. The Remote works great and does everything it claims to do right up untill the sun goes down. The backlight is so bright that I cannot safely operate the boat without covering the remote. I contacted support to find a way to dim the display and there is none. It's ironic that you can change the color and dim the display on the deck, but you cannot dim the remote which is designed for the helm. Too bad Sony can't find someone with some marine experience to design their marine equipment! July 7, 2009
