Unlike other “virtual surround” technologies, rear sound is generated from the front two speakers using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls. No matter what the size or shape of the room or what’s on the wall, it’s possible to hear sounds from behind you without needing to place speakers behind you.

DIGITAL MEDIA PORT

The demand for digital audio and video content continues to be strong. Sony®’s DIGITAL MEDIA PORT (DMP) interface is a proprietary interface that adds networking and connectivity options to your home theater system. Just connect optional accessories (sold separately) which provide the ability to control and power devices while making set up easy and operation simple to use. Very good product! I purchased this to give us more sound in a very large room where it is nearly impossible to run a traditional surround sound system's cables in a hidden manner. The room is nearly 600 sq feet and has a vaulted ceiling. Setup and configuration was easy after reading the manual. The sub-speaker is only on the right side and I noticed that if the sub-woofer was placed near an object that obstructed the speaker, then the sound wasn't as good. After moving the sub-woofer to another location, the sound improved so I recommend placing the sub where you don't obstruct the speaker on the right side. The speaker "bar" comes with a 10' cable that has a DB-9 end. It was easy to extend the cable by using a good quality male to female DB-9 computer serial cable. You want to use a cable that has good large conductors (the wires in the cable) so that there's no loss. I had a 6-foot cable laying around that worked well. Basically, if you buy a cable that is equally as round as the Sony cable, you should be good to go. After installation and some very minor "tweaking" the sound was simply awesome. It doesn't completely emulate a 5.1 or 7.1 system, but it adds a full, rich sound to our large room. When we play games and DVD movies from our Playstation that's connected to this system, the sound is great! It has so much better sound than the speakers in our Sony Bravia 42" television. The *only* problem I have with the product is that our cable box (a hi-def DVR from COMCAST) doesn't have a good input sound level so we find that we're turning the volume very high on the Sony system to hear movies loud. So I wish the amplifier was able to give us a little more punch, or if there was a way to make adjustments to compensate for the lower sound input from the cable box. Since games and DVD's sound good, the issue has to be with the DVR box, not this product. We have enjoyed the sound so far, and would recommend this to people looking for an easy alternative to wanting more sound in a room that's hard to wire for a traditional surround sound system. The sound to price ratio is very high in my opinion. You simply can't beat the price you pay for the sound it makes. Hope you find this helpful. January 8, 2009
LOVE THE REFURB PRODUCT Since I bought a new Sony LCD, I've been looking at the Sony Sound Bar for a while for a little home theater experience, then saw a refurbished one on SonyStyle.com. Fast delivery (just a couple/few days). Was packed great with lots of extra padding in the box to make sure it arrived safe. Hooked up the enclosed optical audio cable to the Sony TV, then two HDMI cables, one from the Sony Blu-ray to the sound bar, then one from the sound bar to the TV, and in five minutes I was up and running. After readng the manual for a couple minutes, got the BRAVIA SYNC running, so turning on and off the three Sony items (TV, Blu-ray and Sound Bar) only need to press one button. Love that Sony refurb product, and will certainly buy again. June 27, 2010
Dissapointing audio adjustment i would love this speaker if it had built in audio normalization. i am having a ridiculously hard time listening to my movies because the dialog volume are too low. if i turn up the volume, the action scenes are ludicrously loud. i tried every adjustment the book. center speak is +6, sub -6. DRC standard. i fiddled with the sound field. no luck. i am returning it and eating the ship cost. OUCH! please don't buy this if you like to listen to movies at a reasonable volume. i'll have to find another sound bar with audio normalization. March 18, 2010
Disappointed My wife bought me this unit for Christmas so we could enjoy BD DVDs that we watch with our SONY VIAO on the TV as well. Day one it worked great. Day two no audio form any of the HDMI inputs. Drove it to Sony's warranty repair shop and am just now in the middle of February able to pick it up due to parts being on backorder. Hopefully it's fixed, but I'm not holding my breath. February 18, 2010
