Boombox without the Boom
Bought this unit to replace a Sony boombox that I had owned for almost 20 years. That unit was not claimed to be ruggedized, but it survived incredible punishment and exposure to the elements on multiple camping, canoeing, beach, and picnic trips. Plus it had great features and a great sound for a boombox. So when the CD player on it finally expired, replacing it with another Sony product was certainly a top of the list consideration. A lot has changed in 2 decades, and the boombox products market has certainly been decimated by the digital MP3 player. Sony's product line in this area certainly demonstrates that market change too. Of the few offerings now available from Sony in this category, the ZS-H10CP was the only possible choice that made any sense for the given need and there were few other comparable products I could find when I broadened my search.
When the boombox arrived, we followed the simple instructions for use and tried to dial in a radio station to check it out. The LCD display turned out to have an out-of-box defect and was only partially legible. Signal reception was about equal to other radios we have owned. We then switched to CD and the LCD readout worked fine for this. Overall the sound reproduction is passable, but ceratinly not up to the standards set by my old Sony unit. The lack of any controls to adjust the sound coming from the box (except the MegaBass on/off switch) was also a disappointment. I never expected any music player, especially not one retailing for almost $130, to not have some sort of basic control for adjusting relative bass/midrange/treble mix.
The unit does appeared to be well constructed with regular outdoor use in mind. It has some heft to it without being overly heavy. Although only used a few times in an outdoor setting so far, it handled those challenges without fault. The controls on the box are well suited to purpose in this regard too.
Overall sound volume output is OK as well for outdoor use, but again not up to what my 20 year old unit could generate. In summary, about the only thing this product can do better than my old unit is play digital music and carry small items in the rear access storage compartment (which is a nice feature).
Maybe I was spoiled by my trusted Sony boombox companion of many years, but on a comparative basis if that unit was a 10, I can only give its replacement a 5.

Awesome Sony Boombox
Whether you?re on a construction worksite, relaxing on a yacht in the San Francisco Bay, fixing the car in the garage, need tunes to take along on that long planned camping trip, or are just someone that wants an excellent sounding boombox, this rugged Sony boombox ZS-H10CP that was designed for outdoor use is for you. This powerful and beautiful red Sony boombox produces clear sound and plenty of volume for music of any genre. The Sony portable features deep bass performance from a two speaker full range system with a large, digital jog dial volume control. The portable stereo includes a digital FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets and telescopic antenna for accurate, drift free radio reception. Additionally, the boombox features a CD player that is virtually shock proof with built-in ESP protection, two high impact speaker grills, backlit LCD display, headphone jack for private listening, line in jack for connection to a portable MP3 player, Mega Bass sound system, MP3 CD playback, water, dirt, and dust resistant high impact plastic construction, and a protective guard bar that doubles as a carry handle and protects the boombox from falling items. The boombox is powered by six D cell batteries that seem to last forever or the unit can be powered by the supplied AC power adapter. Please note that this product was not designed to be completely submerged in water but can stand up to wet conditions during an inclement weather situation. I use this stereo everyday and it never fails to sound awesome. Customers should be aware that the boombox does not come with a remote control and nor does it have a built-in cassette player/recorder for enjoyment of your tape library.

Boom Box
Uses a lot of battery juice! AC adapter works intermittently and I need to buy a replacement for it. CD cover/lid is cheap. Quality of sound is good, but I expected more amplification!
