by RalphNY Pricey but a keeper
I've been waiting for a better quality daily lens for my NEX 7 to replace my kit and this one pretty much it. The lens is solidly built, light and good looking. Performance wise, very clear , fast and performs well on low lights. I was little bit hesitant because of the price but got it anyway. I brought it on my travel to Europe and so far have been satisfied with the results. My NEX 7 now has a perfect partner. I also have 35mm F1.8 Prime lens in addition to the standard kit.

by DeanInCO Brings out the full potential of the NEX7
I searched high and low this year for a great lens for my NEX 7 that I have had since it was released. And this is truly one fantastic lens. It truly brings out the full potential of the NEX7, making it a fantastic travel camera. I pop iy in my bag with my iPad and macbook Pro and I am good to go without having to lug a ton of gear around. I own a Nikon D800, D7100, Fuji X100s, and my iPhone, and I have more fun with this lens and this camera combo than any of the others. The only drawback I have seen so far is autofocus in AF-C mode. At times the camera hunts and focus is slow. Otherwise no complaints whatsoever. It is truly great fun to shoot with this combo.

by DON1 Awesome go-to/all-purpose lense, must have!
The carl-zeiss e-mount 24mm/f1.8 lense has been my favorite amongst all other E-mounts; including 18-200mm, 35mm/f1.8, 16-50mm, 28mm/f2.8 pancake. The good old (chunky) 18-200mm is also a great full range lense, espeically when used with VG20. But it is simply too large for my NEX 5N. This new 16-70mm/f4 does not cover the full range, but it will surely become my most-use lense from now on (or until the full range f1.8 arrive).
As you can see from my video review, the image quality is simply amazing; sharp, crisp, precise color definition, smooth & silky bohkeh. For someone like me doing lots of video work, this lense will really improve my workflow tremendously; The constant f4 is a life/time saver, coupled with a nice 55mm ND; getting great result become much easier.
The excitement from shooting with it is overwhelming! Very similar to the awesome 24mm/f1.8, each shot you get from this lense is amazing. Previously I had to compromise shots with 24mm/f1.8 due to its fixed range, now the limit is (almost) off! From now on, unless it is night shoot, I doubt the lense will leave my camera.
I did not cover the image stablization and low light situations in my review, although I can tell you the lense still rock in both situations. Bear in mind the lense max out at f4, not f1.8! I never regret my decision to dump Canon gear 2 years ago and switch 100% to NEX, with this new lense, I can only hope my long-range f1.8 will come sooner rather than later.

This new Zeiss lens looks like it will be an excellent lens in many respects, including handsomeness. Image quality will no doubt be comparable to the best prime lenses, and it will have the flexibility of a useful zoom range from moderate wide angle to long enough to be perfectly suited for portrait photography, with margin to spare. And reasonably compact. A lot to like, to be sure, and without question an enormous improvement over both of the kit zooms, both of which leave a lot to be desired. But as for the price, well, I suppose that depends on how you look at it. If you are the kind of photographer who would typically be carrying around a kit stuffed with several prime lenses, this one lens will replace at least two of them, maybe three. From that perspective, it is not expensive. However, the typical hobby photographer will probably not be willing to pay this much, and when ready to upgrade from the kit zoom, will probably choose the new G lens (SELP18105G), which also has constant f-number through the zoom range. However, the SELP18105 is a much bulkier lens, and the image quality, while very good, will not quite measure up to the SEL1670Z. If you are looking to replace your kit zoom and are willing to pay to get the image quality you normally get only with a prime lens, then there is no question that the SEL1670Z is the lens you've been waiting for.
