Possibly the most natural sound Ive heard
These are very unusual speakers with their one piece aluminium enclosure and dual super tweeters. They are extremely transparent and mercilessly expose inferior amplifiers. I am using them with the Sony HAP-S1 and am hearing the best sound ever. Even better than my TA-DA9000ES and SS-X90ED in terms of resolution and timbral accuracy. The treble is where the increased clarity is obvious but the bass is unusually tuneful and precise.
I have only attained these results with the HAP-S1, I tried them with a TA-F501ES which was less exciting even though this amp normally sounds superb. They are obviously attuned to the new HIRES audio gear. But they also have needed a long run in especially to get the bass extension. I suspect the previous review did not give them long enough to run in but I have learned that patience is rewarded with Sony.
As regards a recommendation, I think that depends on what gear you have and what sort of sound you want. They give an extremely delicate, refined, neutral and clear sound and they need a good amplifier because they are so revealing. If you are into metallica or rap and want to be blasted away then forget it. They are for hearing the subtle nuances and refinements in acoustic classical and jazz and in that respect I haven't heard anything better at three times the price.

poor quality speakers, small soundstage, 2 bright
bought these speakers an sent them back because they sound like a 50.00 small speaker. cheap sounding with small soundstage. also, overly bright tweeters. had them hooked up to some Pass Labs mono block class A amps. sent there sony uda-1 dac back as well. it didn't sound too good. the Teac 501 dac is a lot better sounding for same money an comes with dual transformers for cleaner sound an higher dynamics an lower signal to noise ratio. Teac dac sounded a lot richer an warmer. i found that this Teac dac has out performed dacs costing triple its price. Teac is built by Esoteric Audio, so there low end is better than most manufacturers high end audio. i wouldn't recommend the sony speakers to anyone. mine come with a scratch on them as well. the Kef LS50speakers are your best bet or there R300, if u can afford them. Tekton Audio or SVS Audio are good options as well. Tekton 2500.00 speakers would out perform them all, including speakers costing over 10 grand. sony has some ES high end line speakers that sound good but most people not gone spend 10 grand on a pair of speakers. highly not recommended.
