by KingOfSpades Top Quality System
Overall, I'd have to say that this is a great system. I'm not a full blown audiophile, but I know good quality sound if I hear it. I got it for my birthday a week ago and it's in my room right now. All I can say is wow. The sub hits and when it does, you'll know it and the highs and mids on the speakers are so clear. It couldn't have been any easier to set up: take it out of the box, match the colors up, and away you go. The A.CAL mic was iffy for me, I hadn't read the instructions so I hadn't anticipated how loud the test sounds would be. I'm not one for a bunch of remotes so I was a bit concerned as to whether I could program my tv remote to the stereo but I found out soon enough that my stereo remote was programmed to the tv already- perhaps because it's a Sony. All in all, a great system> If later on Sony had the option of playing movies through the USB attached to an iPod, that'd be a good selling point but for now, it suits my needs more than enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lekter Excellent sound quality
First of all, I diasgree with the reviewer below because this home theater system DOES save the settings. I unplugged mine for 3 days and when I plugged it back in the settings were saved. The sound quality is unreal for a $199 home theater system. Before this system, I bought the $299 Sony HT-SS370 which is supposed to be better than this one but is nowhere near close to the quality this one offers. The subwoofer is insanely powerful you wouldn't believe is non-powered. Your walls and your neighbors' will shake, guaranteed. As far as the small speakers is concerned, they provide clean crisp sound quality. Watching sports, specially football in 5.1 is simply beautiful with this home theater system as you can hear all the sounds from the crowd and from the players, and the sound when watching movies is great you'll love it. Overall excellent theater system for the price.

I already was expecting a good product I have a Sony Bravia 46 inch flat screen and bought this system to compliment that but was limited on how much I could spend and when i turned this system an oh lord within three days my neighbor was at the door lol my other system is good as well its RCA minimally price actually i paid more for it than I did this one and Sony of course sounds better but I can control the volume level of each speaker including the sub-woofer on my RCA that's the only thing I miss but the bass man i tell you the bass and the way this system executes sound is mindboggling I love it I am really happy with my purchase and feel like i got a thousand dollar system for $150.00

Let me start by saying I'm by no means a audiophile, but I do know good sound quality when I hear it.
Sony really let me down with this product. I understand that this home theater system is priced well for a economy system. With that said though its still over-priced for not having a blu-ray player. I took the bait thinking the 1000w system would make up for the lack of not having the blu-ray player, because I was really looking for a system that would be good for just watching good movies on our cable & netflix because we simply don't watch many dvds.
I have a soundbar alone set up in my other room with a wireless sub that blows this Sony theater system away, & it was just a fraction of the price.
You are very limited on the settings, its very standard. You are not able to control nothing in all reality. The sub is a major issue as it seems too get most of the juice coming from this system, tends too be way too loud and over takes the other speakers. Sad thing is, I'm the type of guy that likes a lot of bass with movies & music, but this is just too much at times and completely ruins the effect. Would be nice too control the bass, but you can't. I can control the bass on the sub included with my $40.00 Computer speaker system, why not this one? Lol.
So with that said, in this price range I do believe that there are way better products out there. Most that even include a blu-ray player at the same price. Do you're homework and research online, find a truly good product worth dropping your hard earned money on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by KC64106 Great Value and Product
The system is not chock full of customizable features but it gets the job done with fantastic sound. Would not consider myself an Audiophile by any means but I do enjoy premium sound so not having a fully customizable output interface is fine by me. Would like to have a separate control on the sub to bring it down a notch since I have a very small living room.
I did notice a major difference by using an actual tripod for the calibration mic during the set up process as opposed to simply setting the mic on the couch round about ear level. Am running the cable and PS3 through the TV via HDMI then sound from TV to this box via optical cable. Quality is great.
Do note the DAV-DZ170 model is not a BluRay player. (Seriously, BlueRay should be standard offering by now.) Not a big deal for me since I have the PS3 but is something I did not check pre-purchase as I was simply looking for a sound system upgrade from my old analog Pioneer receiver.
Has support for iPod connection and the remote control can control the iPod, however, the receiver does not display the iPod screen info out to the TV which is a skosh disappointing. Perhaps I have to look deeper into the settings on this....
Overall a great value for the price point.

I'm sorry, but It does not support dolby digital plus which is now the standard for streaming. This means no surround sound from netflix or vudo, Don't know how long Amazon and Blockbuster will continue supporting plain Dolby Digital, but I think it's safe to say they won't be supported forever.
Furthermore, it has a receiver powered (normal speaker) subwoofer, which most receivers do not support. So if you upgrade, you are looking at total replacement (new receiver and speakers). Sony appears to have discontinued this idea, so there is no current path to upgrade.
It is now defunct. Too bad cause it is a nice and powerful system!

I love the sound of this Hts.It really is surround sound and makes movies and music come to life. The only thing id didn't like is that the speaker wire is very short for a normal size room.Too short.

Rated 2 out of 5 by blueRidgeMtns Won't save settings
Biggest gripe: every time I go to play a DVD I have to enter my TV screen size and speaker configuration. It doesn't save my settings. It's not like I lose electricity a lot in my house; I have to reset the settings daily. Secondly, if I want to get a DVD out I turn it on (wait for it to wake up) then click the Eject button (unfortunately not on the remote) and the tray slowly slides out. They could make this whole process quicker. Finally, all too often I see "Operation not allowed at this time". I understand sometimes if you're watching a trailer the DVD manufacturer doesn't want you to skip it, but I should be able to push the Stop button at any time. Not on this DVD player. The other day it wouldn't let me press Stop while on the DVD menu.
On the plus side, the speakers sound good.
Overall, pretty disappointing.
