i was a minolta owner so i bought this camera because it was compatible with my old lenses. it was also new technology that i would like to try out. the first problem i encountered was whenever i use it on full auto and the flash goes off, the shutter lagged so the images were coming out blurry. i fixed this problem by using the manual setting on shutter speed with flash. the problem with this is i can't get too close with my subjects otherwise they come out too bright. so by standing at least 10 ft away, my pics came out ok and sharp. my second problem was the video. the camera will shut off after 2 mins of recording due to over heating. this also happens when you're outside in the sun. you have to shield the camera from the sun while you're walking otherwise it will not turn on. i resolved this by removing the battery and fanning the camera while shielding it from the sun and it will turn on again. this would not be a good thing if you're outside taking pics for like an hr continously with the temp over 80 degrees farenheit cause this camera will shut down. i gave it 3 stars because of these 2 problems otherwise i would have given it 5 stars. i still love this camera because it focuses quickly and especially the panoramic and rapid fire shots that it can do. with my 18-250mm lens this camera can still hold its own. i've taken pics of insects from 5 ft away that i was able to magnify that made ppl say wow! i hope these problems are fixed with the next generation of alphas so i don't have to keep using the manual modes at night.

I have a problem with overheating in still shooting modes. Also at times I have a problem with what I call shutter lag? I mailed my camera to the service center on May 30th. I have gotten email and phone calls to keep me informed but still no camera. I have many Sony digital cameras, my first took a floppy disk. H2, H5 , two F828. to name a few. This is the first Sony I'm disapointed in. I shot a Minolta 7 D for several years. This a55 doesn't come near my old 7D. The 55 is slow. Sorry.
You ask if I would recommend this camera. I don't know. I think if it were working right I would. I know I would my other Sony's. As is I would have to say no.

Very good but with more manual
I have been playing with this camera for only a few weeks now. I am loving it. I am still learning about what it can do. There are a few things I wish this camera had and did not have.
For HDR mode I wish the camera did not make the picture and was more like other makes where the camera took 5 shots and you have to use software to make a HDR photo.
Also wish their was a dial on the front and back. Having to hold down a button and use the dial at the same time a little harder but worse slower.
To give us that extra dial please just remove the flash. It is just not that useful at all. A external flash is a must.

My best Sony camera
This is my second Sony camera. I previously owned and gave to my wife my Sony a380. My purchase of the Sony SLT-A55V is perhaps the best purchase of a product I have ever made. I love the fact that it takes panoramic and 3D panoramic pictures. I also like the fact that all the menu items are also very convenient to use. The images that I have taken with the A55 have been just fantastic whether using manual mode or any other mode for that matter. The auto and auto+ feature is just great for taking pictures in a hurry where you don't have the time to set the camera up. All-in-all, this camera is just the most for the money in my opinion. If you want to make pictures and not just take pictures, this is the camera to do it with.
