I think the cord should be a little longer.

I've had these Mdr-1R headphones for a while now and have used them frequently including a few airplane trips.
I was hesitant at the high price, but am really glad I got what I did. These headphones open up sound and make all genres of music enjoyable. I didn't know the value of good headphones till now.
The best feature outside the clear and powerful sound is how comfortable these are. I always grew tired of past headphones after an hour, but not these. The cushions are soft and hug ears rather than bend them.
The headphones also passed the airplane test four times now. The headphones cant cancel out all sound but they dont claim to. You do notice a sizable drop in background noise with these on though. Add a song a engine decibles are quickly overpowered by the headphones. A nice feature for Travelling is the folding nature of the headphones to lie flat and so can squeeze into any carryon including my squeeze under the seat bag.

So far as I have been able to discern, these headphones are an incredible feat of engineering. They sound much better than almost any other headphone in their price bracket. That being said, the build quality leaves something to be desired. With a pair of $250+ headphones, I expect to find nicer materials than these are built with. The earpads and the headband are probably the nicest things on them. The sound is miles ahead of where the build quality would suggest. It is enlivening and exciting to listen to music on the MDR-1R. The "sound stage" is close and detailed, as is usually the case with close-backed headphones. It's not overwhelming though. Another stellar audio product from Sony. I recommend them to anyone searching for incredibly comfortable headphones capable of accurate sound reproduction. The price is a little high, but if you have the ears to appreciate it, these are a worthwhile purchase.

Expensive, but worth it if you like very low distortion, perfect clarity, and a wider frequency response then the human ear. I play around with wave forms and I can attest that these phones will reproduce frequencies from the infrasonic to the ultrasonic range. Never mind the smartphone for which these phones were reportedly designed - they're wonderful for that use, but also important for listening to uncompressed formats of music and sound. My old Koss Pro 4a's from years ago were not bad, but they wouldn't even be in the same league as these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by zeedan94 Best headphones i got since the XB500
Even though it is built from plastic, its porsche plastic not the cheap one you expect to get
ever since i got my XB500 i ran through some famous headphones like the beats studios, marshall majors and some other headphones i used from my friends, and they were all disappointing when compared to the XB500.
The MDR-1R is the first upgrade i got since the XB500 and i really love it, perfect treble for female voices/orchestral music, the bass is decent too and can be boosted with an equalizer setting
overall, this headphones give you the best depth of music i have ever heard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BillinGA Best Headphones I Own
I just got a pair of these for review on Amazon and they blew me away. I own headphones from many of the top makers like AKG, Ultrasone, Sennheiser, etc. and for comfort and sound, these I now consider my best. Ample bass, full midrange and treble response that isn't shrill. They are small enough to wear around with your iPod. Very impressed with this offering by Sony that surpasses offerings by companies whose main product are headphones.

I had bought Beats Studios and found myself wanting more out of my headphones. I did some research and these headphones kept coming up so a few months ago I purchased a pair...I will never look back. These headphones are top-notch. The price may scare some away but you get what you pay for, amazing sound and bass, and I can get away with wearing them for hours without any discomfort. By far the best headphones I have ever owned. The only draw back is the cheapish carrying pouch that comes with the headphones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TBear3 great sound
I bought these to use on the bus with my new hearing aid. They're perfect at blocking out the right amount of noise. I can hear the bus stop announcements but the engine noise is reduced. VERY comfortable. I have worn these for hours pressure free.
