Over Ten Years. I was in sophomore years in High School 1999 when I bought these Headphones. One of the first things I did was open it up to remove the foam that block small hole at the back of the speakers which gave it more bass. After about two years the jack plug started to break. Not long after it tore open showing wires. I decided to cut it off because It started to affect the sound. I bought a replacement plug from RadioShack and solder the wires together which fixed it. I used it 9 more years without it breaking anymore. 2011 January the plastic that support the metal band near the swivel joints broke off. Hard plastic don't really last that long I guess. I thought about using electrical tape to fix it but I decided to rest the old girl. I put her near in the bin with my very first PSX. She rest there even now. I like to take electronics apart after they are unrepairable like take out the magnets and wires for later use....but these, I couldn't. She just meant too much to me that I couldn't do it. If you take care of your things very well then get these. Later though I bought a $30 skullcandy-titan in-ear plugs which had these thread wrapped around the wires. After three months the jack plug were not the first to break but the wires inside the speakers. It was one of the wires that's inside diaphragm which controls the sound. I guess it couldn't handle heavy bass music. I couldn't fix it so I trashed it and went with eskuche 33 1/3. BTW these headphones are ok they hurt your ears after long extended use which I never had a problem with the MDR-V500. If you really want a really good headphones go for MDR-V700 twice as much but you really pay for what you get. I have the MDR-V700 but they never leave the house. June 16, 2011
Skip these headphones After the right side stopped working, and Sony refused to exchange them, I decided to open them up and see what caused the problem. The wire going from the left cup to the right cup had completely frayed inside the left cups hinge point (which allows the cup to flip over for DJ use). It's clearly not a case of misuse, it's a design flaw. The wire is incredibly thin and unprotected and should never be routed the way that it is inside the cup. I've included two pictures to show where the wire frayed. I would skip these headphones and I would definitely reconsider other like them. I'm disappointed that Sony refused to exchange them when clearly the problem is a design issue, not an issue that I had any control over. I don't think I should have to pay to repair headphones that stopped working properly because of their design. I was hoping Sony would be more help. April 1, 2011
sick, pure sound, low bass these headphones are excellent. i'm a dj and i just bought these to try them out and they're great & exactly what i needed. the design is nice and sleek and very slim looking. the headphones overall is comfortable. great sound, but the bass is a little low. im not sure if you can change the setting for the bass but overall this headphone is worth its price! well worth the steep price The first time I tried these on and tested them I was amazed by the sound quality. The bass sound is very good and it can get quite loud. The construction is nice because it blocks out outside noise quite well. The swivel ear cups are nice if I just want to hear something really quick but don't want to sit down and put the headphones on all the way; and two people can listen with these at the same time.
