I was so excited when I bought this camera. It was my first ''real'' camera indeed. For some reason I could not take lots of pics as I always liked until I went on vacation. During the trip the camera worked beautiful... But..the last day of the trip while I was taking pictures it simply stopped working. The back panel did not respond. The LCD screen was working though. I had the battery pack out of the cam, waited for a couple of minutes, re-inserted it but nothing happened. I got so frustrated coz I did not take one single pic of my last day on vacation. At home I tried to see what was going on... did not respond. After one week had passed I switched it on and it worked as usual. I updated the firmware. But a few pics later BAM! It became unresponsive again. The back panel, menus, selector..nothing works. I cannot even check the pics I have on the memory card. It seems like it´s been blocked. Sad. I wanted it badly. I waited until THE RIGHT one came just to learn that it is not working properly or at least as it should.

My family has owned several point and shoot cameras over the years as well as Canon DSLR's and Sony video cameras. This camera is comparable and in some ways exceeds performance. I especially like the quality of pictures considering the small size of the camera. Fits fine in my handbag with the 18-55 lens attached. The pictures are superior to previous top of the line point and shoot cameras I've owned. With an Eye-Fi Mobile SD card and the small size of this excellent camera, I will likely start taking lots of pictures again. Thank you Sony for putting a DSLR quality camera in the size of a Point and Shoot. The price can get to be a bit on the high side considering the additional lenses and accessories you may desire to buy. If this camera works out as well as I believe it will, the cost over time will not be so bad.

No Steadyshot active mode...
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase. The nex-5 takes great pictures.Much better than sony Hx5v that I also own.The latest firmware also made using camera a lot better. The only complaint I have is I recently purchased the sel 18-200mm zoom lens to go with my camera. This is a great lens.It takes sharp pictures and also has active Steadyshot for video. And there's my problem. The nex cannot take advantage of the active Steadyshot mode for shooting video. In the menu for the nex, there's only two options;on or off.The sony Vg10 camcorder, which can also use this lens, has the menu choices off, standard, and active.Even my Hx5v has active mode steadyshot built in with the same menu options;off, standard, and active.I see this as a big omission on sony's part.I paid a lot for this lens.(1 of 3 specially designed to be used with this camera)Yet I can't take advantage of all the features built into this lens. Please Sony fix this problem with a firmware update!I know I can always use a tripod, but that's not always possible or practical. If this problem is not a concern for you, than you will be very happy with this camera.
