Rated 2 out of 5 by Bob454 worst user interface I have experienced.
The embedded operating system (user interface) is the worst I have ever experienced with any audio / video component.
Connecting to wifi has always been problematic. I eventually got that to work.
But now in less than two years of ownership, speaker configuration does not function properly. The setup will not allow me to select the speaker configuration I actually have. I have a simple 5.1 setup. It won't recognize that or even offer 5.1 in the selection list.
Auto speaker calibration repeatedly fails. Upon trying manual configuration, the receiver started sending random tones and static to the speakers.
HDMI passthrough no longer functions as well.
When it worked, the sound was great.
The menuing system overall is poorly set up, slow to respond or unresponsive altogether.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jonrm5000 SONY rocks!
This AVR is excellent. It was easy to set up, the built in Wifi (which is a SONY exclusive) is great for internet radio and most definitely for Airplay. Movies and music sound terrific, and video games are very immersive.
For the price, this receiver offers a lot. It definitely gives Denon, Pioneer and others a run for their money. It is also a great size and it is easy on the eyes. It looks awesome and works very well with my SONY XBR-HX 950.
Thank you SONY for helping me make my home theater rockin', and my friends and family ever so envious.

This surround receiver is way to much receiver for the money. Bluetooth, WIFI built in and 2nd zone HDMI are you kidding me. I have it hooked up to Klipch reference system and it sound absolutely great. Home run would recommend to anyone. OH and you get a 5yr warranty top that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by garioch7 Somewhat Disappointing But An Excellent Receiver
I purchased an STR-DA2400ES receiver in 2009. Recently, it started having issues powering up and down and there was some crackle in the speakers. Having a rather pricey XBR8-46" Sony TV, I decided to replace my old receiver with the STR-DA1800ES. My first disappointment was the lack of both phono and cassette deck inputs - I have SONY models of both products. The instruction manual, particularly that part dealing with Menu settings is deficient in that it does emphasize turning "GUI ON" before attempting to modify settings. I also have been unable to name my radio stations. My menu for that does not show that option. That's my complaints. On the positive side, the receiver is very, very good for sound quality and with Bravia Sync enabled, controlling all of my Sony components #BD, CD, TV# is just great and the SAT performance is also outstanding. I would recommend this receiver, but be aware that there is no phono input, a real lapse in my view for a piece of ES gear, since many audiophiles, myself included, treasure our old vinyl. I can understand why cassette decks might be supported, but I think that they should be, for the price, though admittedly real estate for more jacks on the back of the receiver is limited. Recommended.

Depending on if you had a professional set it up or if you did it yourself. Once you have it just right, you can immediately hear and see the difference. blu ray DVD's you see things you never saw on regular DVD's. On CD's, I was playing a 1985 jazz CD and it sounded better than ever even tho I was using the same speakers and sub-woofer. The best part is the 5 year warrantee.

Has to be one of the best receivers I've owned. Clean, comprehensive user's guide, just one fine receiver.

Rated 2 out of 5 by proj964 no external control support
There is no external control support in this "ES" receiver via Android "ES Remote" app. What a very unfortunate feature choice on Sony's part. The built-in web server interface is also very lacking -- it only supports network and update functions. It appears Sony doesn't really get how a network capable receiver should function.
