Compact POV action cam
Good but missing some features
The camera is good and video quality very good. However, it does feel like the software is incomplete in some cases. You cannot delete videos you've shot, either from within the camera menu or from the computer, you have to format the card. So if you shoot a movie by mistake, you cannot delete it.
Another problem I found is using it with a compatible smart phone. I've tried it both with an iPhone and Sony Xperia phone. In both cases it works well, however, be sure to disable your WiFi connection on the phone after use, or else the camera will stay connected to your phone and as a result, it will not auto-sleep. This can cause the battery of the camera to drain very quickly. Not great especially since you might have the camera mounted to your helmet and used your phone to get the right angle. Afterwards, if you do not kill the Wifi on your phone completely, the camera will stay on and you'll never know. Then when it's time to take a new shot, it could be out of batteries.

Lots of FUN
I just recently bought the HDR-AS30V. The optics are excellent, Color reproduction is excellent. Espeaslly the skin tone. On a large High def. TV the picture is outstanding including sound quality. I took the camera out for a test, late afternoon to dark. Walking the city streets. People did not realize it was a camera. I went out of my way to engage people in conversation. The video quality after dark was more than I had hoped for. The only problem I had was the end of my baseball cap and part of the frame from my glasses was in the corner of picture. The camera does need the optional Live View wrist monitor/controller to correctly frame the picture. I spent two hours walking without losing battery, so I don’t know for sure how long the battery will last. I have a friend that has the new GO. Does not come close to matching Sony picture quality. I would suggest that Sony sell a light weight bicycle helmet accessory that would allow you to adjust angle of camera or you could buy almost any helmet and jury rig it without difficulty.

Adixxion XA2 returned & purchased Sony AS30V
I just purchased the HDR-AS30V after experiencing overheating and shutdown issues with the JVC GC-XA2 Adixxion action cam. I had purchased this JVC from a REI store near where I live, and they had just received this new Sony action cam, so I decided to try it out to see if it is a better performer than the JVC. This camera was $50 cheaper at REI than the XA2, so I got the extra battery for the Sony and the headband strap and mount since they had them in stock at REI. Besides the video examples I saw online comparing the quality to 3 other top competitors, including the GoPro, I mainly wanted the Sony because of the optional Live View wrist monitor/controler, which is also waterproof according to what I have read. Once the camera is mounted, for example on the side of one's head, then you can not know if it gets out of alignment without taking the camera off and checking the alignment or looking at the smart phone apps view. This is a big inconvenience and Sony has solved that issue with the Live View wrist monitor/controller. I just wish Sony had stated the exact model number of that wrist monitor in this camera's documentation. I am not sure which wrist monitor is the correct one to get for this camera. I like the profile of this camera so far much better than the JVC. I really resent being a beta tester for the lame JVC GC-XA2. Another customer on Amazon had the same overheating problem with two of these same JVCs as I have had. In the highest resolution setting the camera would simply stop recording at about 24 minutes every time. What a pathetic product to hand to the public! I hope Sony has done a better job than JVC. Stay tuned for my review after using the Sony for a while.

excellent addition to a travel videographer
As a travel videographer, i need the equipment to be LIGHT. I use VG20, NEX 5n as B cam, plus numerous E mount lens. For action & wet shots, I now acquired the AS30 mainly for its light weight. Additionally, carl zeiss lens, excellent stablization, 720/120p super slow motion, video quality, exteral audio input option, direct HDMI out, and low cost are all very appealing. I find myself using this cam in more occasions due to its small profile and audio capability. The one-press recording button is extremely convinient to use, with auto on/off, very handy for one-man/one-hand operation. With proper casing, it goes quite deep under the water without worrying leaking. On a full charge, battery can shoot continuously for about 2 hours, I got an extra battery just in case.
It'd be nice if the cam have tripod mount built-in. This way I can mount it on a tripod and connect external audio source and hdmi monitor. Also will be good if the cam have flat bottom so that it can stand-up by itself when placed on flat surface. Other than that, I have no complaints.
Overall, this is a great addition to my equipment list for travel videography needs, while not adding much weight to my camera bag. The picture quality come out of this small wonder is amazing, works well with my VG20 and NEX 5N. When needed, color profile is easy to adjust duing post using Adobe premiere pro. Last but not the least, it is so much fun to play with 720/120p mode, this option added many potential for interesting shots.
