Rated 1 out of 5 by SirDaav Don't Do it. Wait for ver 2.
We literally had this unit for 5 mins of pictures... but the optional and very expensive underwater door (the default door cannot focus under water you have to pay a premium for the flat door) is very very clunky to use.
The enclosure fogs up very quick, faster than any other underwater cam I have owned, prob. due to size - and found the tiniest bit of water was getting in - literally drops. We removed it from water immediately, tried to dry it out and unit is dead. For an action cam used as an action cam you have no warranty - because water/scuffs/drops void the warranty. They should seal the electronic bits in wax for cushion and water proofing.
The GoPros are bigger, but because of that don't fog up as quick, and you don't have to buy an extra door. Everyone told us not to buy the Sony because they had no UW white balance setting - we did anyway and now we get told to throw it away and buy another - because of Sony's poor design.
We literally have 3 mins of video for nearly 400 bucks of gear.
Wait for series 2 maybe they will integrate the UW door, until then, it's a HUGE expense to throw away after a few minutes - and those useless accessories are very expensive for what they are and their design is not good. I cannot recommend this unit to anyone - used primarily for Underwater with all their legit accessories - it fails miserably and they won't back their product used as it was intended. Wait for version 2 or buy another brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Skyboy141 This DOES have Time Lapse Video! better than GoPro
I've done tons of searching through comparisons and this one tops it all as regards to video quality, sound quality, user options (steadyshot is a MUST when doing sports and sony always has the best in steadyshot technology) and some people were complaining that this camera doesn't have timelapse,, but it does! Just use the Interval function and let it sit (5, 10, 30, 60 sec whichever you choose) and it'll take pics. This is where I saw people complain that it "only took pics". well, these are the pics used in making a timelapse video. unfortunately I couldn't find any of the sony software to have this editing so I used windows movie maker, dropped all the pics in sequential order and made each picture to show at 0.10 second per picture. And what do you get? Time lapse video! save as video and there you go! I put a time lapse video demonstration that I just made. Now I Really don't need to spend another couple hundred bucks just for time lapse!

I bought this cam to record my motorcycle rides. The only helmet mounting option Sony offers is on top of the helmet or goggle mount. The adhesive mounts did not come close to matching the curve of my helmet (to flat or to curved). Thankfully they have a standard tripod mount on the waterproof case so I made my own mount that clips on the bottom of the helmet for either side. I like the view it gives being on the side of the helmet and it is less likely to get damaged there. The fact that it is so light weight is a huge plus if your going to mount it to a helmet. It can also be velcro'd just about anywhere for some unique cam placements. The cam itself is very nice and really shoots great video. I do wish steady cam worked in the 170 degree view setting but the image is still very stable. The biggest surprise to me has been the sound quality from this little cam. It's not to bad even with the waterproof case on. I have a lot more testing to do but I think this just might give GoPro a run for it's money especially if Sony offers some more versatile mounting solutions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by PLaunius A lot for the money
Very easy to use. Auto power on and off so all you do it press a single button. I bought an extra battery and after charging both over night, each only had 3 of 4 bars. Can't seem to get a full charge. My biggest complaint is that to change modes (video/slow/interval photo) you have to open the waterproof case to get to the buttons. The case really needs two smaller buttons like are on the "start/stop" so that any function can be done with it sealed. If your hands are wet from water or snow, then you'll likely leave some on the camera and lock that moisture in the case with the camera.
I still really think this is a great camera for the money and I'm happy I bought it.

This Sony Action Cam is amazing. It would have been the perfect action cam except 60FPS cannot record sound. I believe most action cam users with fast action footage use 720P 60FPS to avoid CMOS jello effects. I also tested the cam underwater. The auto white balance requires adjustments. I love the SteadyShot, Zeiss Lens, and the Image processor, almost the perfect cam, but I probably cannot use the cam since there is no sound at 60FPS. Great Cam though if you do not need 60FPS.

Rated 3 out of 5 by wyman several problems
1) how do you turn the really annoying sound off for every button click? sometimes i like to record things discretely, but with a HUGE sound on every button click, discrete becomes impossible.
2) to charge this thing, you have to use a usb connected to a pc that is on. that is slow and annoying. currently there isn't even an adapter. go find a third party charger.
3) the picture taking mode sucks. time lapse images, 5 second is the minimum. why not 1 second or even faster?
please let me know if anybody finds out how to turn the sound off. otherwise great quality, just hard to use. typical sony.

BACKGROUND: Okay so I've been using the GoPro Hero 2 for almost a year now and it has great features, great image, and great overall functionality but... All these great things were hit and miss. Their firmware updates are horrible. When we went on a snowboarding trip it would freeze up, and I'd have to do battery pulls etc. Then it wouldn't recognize my class 10 SD card. Then it wouldn't even turn on with full battery. Read up and you'll see a lot of other people saying the same things on the Hero 3's. It was a waste of $299. Anyways GoPro replaced it and I sold it as soon as I got it back and bought the Action Cam.
REVIEW: Out of the box was pretty straight forward. I like the micro usb for charging since that's what my phone uses. So far I like the white balance compared to GP and the Image Stabilization, that thing is amazing. The case is kind of faulty in the fact that you can only do instant ON OFF recording. It's simple and heavy duty. Can't access any settings in there though, maybe the WiFi one can. There is quite a bit more glare from the sun than the GP but it isn't too bad. The low light image sensor is a nice feature but I was expecting a little more out of it. Not to proud of the location of the ports. It's a round camera and has a cover that folds out to the side so you can't stand it up. Battery life is better than the GP I've noticed. The fact that these cameras have firmware updates is bad a** because they're always working to make it better. Since out of the box it now has 1080 at 60 fps and some variations in beep functions and finally a fix on the underwater white balance.
FINAL THOUGHTS: I want a camera that is going to work when I need it to and that was the deal breaker for GP. With the added firmware update the Sony in my experience is the better camera. Now let's see some more mounts!

Rated 3 out of 5 by bikram777 Firmware update needed
This is not a review, but posting my points to buy this camera as a consumer's point of view. I was about to buy this camera but holding a bit now until Sony confirms of release of firmware update. My two biggest concerns are the natural color is not maintained and only vertical video recording. The sky looks pretty horrible with those overly applied blues. Sand or outdoor ground color is pretty nice on GoPro. I like the color distribution of GoPro. Also, due to the shape of ActionCam, it becomes harder to hold it on a surface. Flipping video recording would be a nice feature. The biggest disadvantage is the color distribution. This shouldn't be a problem for Sony to bring a firmware update that fixes above problems.
