Rated 4 out of 5 by CarneAsada Really great product but Only for SONY 2013+ TV's!
I am starting this with a description and short overview of features and use:
It allows for Google TV to be used natively with a 2013+ Sony TV. What is Google TV you are probably asking. Well, it is a form of smart TV. There is an HDMI in and the HDMI out is that plug you actually plug into the TV's HDMI MHL input. Some of the 2013 TV's don't have extra power through the HDMI to power this device so you have to also connect it via USB for power. It is all really simple to connect. There is also a micro SD card input. Lastly there is also an IR out and emitter. The emitter is a little IR bulb on a cable that you place in front of the cable box IR receiver. I used a flashlight and shined it on the face of my cable box so I could find the little IR receiver port and then glued the emitter next to it. It also connects to the INTERNET but only through WIFI so you need a wireless router or wireless bridge of some keep that in mind if your whole network is only wired Ethernet.
Via the HDMI in on this little stick, you connect your cable box though HDMI to this little stick and it will process the cable information it receives and connect that information with the INTERNET. First you have to select your provider and remote settings and then it will work. For example it can bring up a program guide to tell you when it will be on next or if you have a fancy cable box that can record TV it can set up automatic recording through your box or possible to an HDD or micro SD card, I haven't tried this yet but it provides me with this option. It also has a built in microphone in the remote so you can speak search criteria or other things to it instead of typing. It can also do voice memos and such.
The other functions of the newest Google TV is that it is based android or something like it and you can install apps via Google Play. So you can get most of your favorite android apps on your TV. That is nice but it only a dual core with I think 1gb of ram and 8gb of storage it is slow. It is faster than an MK802+ but slower than say an MK908. Both of those are android HDMI TV sticks. They don't let you do the Google TV features but rather act like an android tablet or phone for the TV. They are a little cheaper, like $35 for the 802 and $70 for the 908 but then you'll spend another $20 or $30 for a good remote, but you can't control TV functions like this Sony device can and they are not more intuitive sometimes they are annoying to even use, They act more like a tablet and really need a multi touch interface to work well and not an air mouse.
Lastly This device can interact with Sony TV products like Bravia SYNC. I own a Sony ST520 receiver, PS3, a Sony blue ray player, HTPC and a Sony KDL60-R550 TV that are connected to the TV. I am still learning the controls and stumbled on some sort of Bravia sync functionality and was able to interact with everything, but I am not sure how I did it. So i can say something like that works but how I'm not sure. There is little documentation for more advanced features of the NSZGU1. If I figure it out again I will update this post and explain how to do it. For those who don't know, Bravia Sync is a set of special commands for Sony products that support it. It allows for remote control of Sony products through the tv that it is connected to so you only need one remote. THAT IS THE MAIN REASON TO BUY ALL SONY AV PRODUCTS. They can all work together.
There are a lot more functions but you can learn about them by reading literature on-line for Google TV.
This is a good Google TV product but like all Google TV devices it is a little slow. I think this is the newest and fastest one so far I resorted to first tweaking the IR emitter speed so when I pressed the buttons it would function faster and I also got an HDMI splitter for the cable box so I could have a connection to the TV and one to the NSZGU1. The reason is simple... GOOGLE TV IS TOO COMPLEX for my parents. Therefore having a cable TV connection to the TV from the cable box for regular services is nice since they know how to operate the Cable box remote and basic TV remote.
The reason I subtracted one star from this device is that we have a really large family room so the TV is far away from where we sit, hence buying a big screen. This makes it so that the blue-tooth keyboard mouse sometimes looses connection when at the furthest away like about 35 or 40 ft away. I wish it was more powerful but I must say it is hands down the best remote, mouse, keyboard interactive device I have used and if anyone ever writes drivers for the mouse I will buy one my computer. The remote also has voice search through Google TV and it can work really well once you train it. It is only OK otherwise.
Some basic advice on this device.
BUY THIS IF...
You have 2013 or newer Sony TV and want more smart functions.
You have a Sony ecosystem.
You really like Google TV channel functions over your set top box.
You can use Google TV or a modern smart phone.
DO NOT BUY IF...
If you don't have a Sony TV made in 2013 or newer, do not buy this device.
If you don't really like Google TV or it is too complex, do not buy this device.
If you already have an advanced set top box or HTPC or other advanced viewing methods this is not beyond an HTPC, do not buy this device.
If you are already satisfied with your TV's smart setup, like does it let you access netflix and hulu and you tube then do not buy this device.
If you don't want to spend the premium price for android functionality, then do not buy this device.
The bottom line,
THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT.
IT IS A REALLY NITCH PRODUCT!
You need a 2013+ Sony TV, you have to be able to put up with a more complex interactions, but you get the best remote on the market, easiest way to interact with android google play stuff on your TV, voice search and there is Picture in Picture, I forgot to mention that. I like the device, but it is not for everyone.
It is a great product for what it is and was recently updated to Google TV version 4. This is also a pretty new product so give it some time. And no you don't need this, same with all our wants, we don't need them. You'll be fine if you never use this but if you like google tv it is GREAT.
Thanks for reading. and check out amazon for some other reviews. Some people use it with NFL game pass or something and sling box
PS: go into settings and you can update the device to version 4.x if it doesn't automatically prompt you.
