Blu-ray Disc™ player
DLNA not compatible with Windows Media Player
I bought this player thinking that I could stream audio and video files from Windows Media Player to the BDP-S590 (send multiple media files to the BDP using the Play To feature in WMP). After spending several hours with Sony support, their final determination was that WMP version 11 and 12 not are fully DLNA compliant and that I would have to use a different compliant media server in order to stream multiple media files to the Sony player.

Some glitches so far, but manageable
So I bought this as a replacement to my BDP-BX58 model from Costco which after a few years would no longer play BluRay (DVDs were okay, just not BluRay). So the great thing was that the remote and main screen for this version was similar to my old one (I didn't even have to reset my universal remote to control the player). Other than the console look, there wasn't alot of changes between the 2 versions. Movies look and play great, though they seem to be a little slower to load up than the previous version. Same with the apps, Hulu Plus and Netflix seem to take longer to load. I use an Ethernet cable for internet, not wireless so throughput isn't the problem.
Issue - I've had it for 2 days now and I've had to unplug the unit 3x already while browsing the apps because the system "stuck" in the app or when I tried to turn off the player it just kept flashing "Off" on the screen but never actually shutdown (nor would it respond to any other commands). Only solution was unplugging it. So long as it doesn't do this during Netflix or Hulu (which is the main thing I use the player for) then I'll keep it, otherwise I'm returning it. I'd replace it now if I hadn't spent so much time customizing it already. If the only issue I have is occasionally unplugging it, then I can live with that.

Cancel Cable or Satellite TV, Get Netflix, Save $
For watching DVD's we had four Sony models, DVP-SR210P, which worked great but this Sony model, BDP-S590, was recommended to me by my brother as a way to cut television costs. What he did was, he cancelled his cable TV bill and he then used this model and subscribed to Netflix streaming and DVD services - which is less than $16 a month. His old cable TV bill was $98 and it provided hundreds of channels of garbage, you know this yourself. My wife and I felt the same way about our dish TV and the huge bill for hundreds of unwatchable channels. So I bought one BDP-S590, subscribed to Netflix, set it up in the living room, and everyone loved it so I bought another one and then two more. With Netflix, this model pays for itself in one month by using streaming video instead of cable or dish channels. I love biographies and documentries but the History channel, Discovery channel, The Learning Channel, etc. are all now just non stop marathons of moron driven viewing like Duck Dynasty, Cake Boss, Pawn Stars, etc. So the cerebral documentries are gone and so is the need for cable or dish TV bills to get the channels that are no longer what they once were. Ironically, the History Channel is better on Netflix than the actual History Channel is now! Both families also bought antenna receivers so we could get free local channels mostly for news and weather reports. So if you want to expand your television viewing choices back to the golden era of cable TV when movie channels were included in the cost and channels offered interesting, viewable content, buy this model for every television set in your house.

I bought the S590 as replacement for my excellent S570 so my new player had big shoes to fill due to the fact that the S570 was such an excellent player. Well the S590 has lived up to my expectations in so many ways. From beautiful PQ to excellent 3D to features galore this player has filled the big shoes my S570 left behind and did it with excellence. I love the design of the S590 as well as it fits in smoothly with my Home Theater setup. Paired with my 46HX750 LED/3D Tv it makes an unbeatable combo. This player is a must have for anyone who loves a true Home Theater experience and its another winner from Sony as always.
