We went in to Best Buy two weeks ago to buy yet another Samsung flat screen. I wanted to upgrade our rather new, 65 in Samsung I bought for my Great Room in my condo. My husband and I have since married, and moved into a new home with, ugh, a bigger wall above the GR fireplace (any reason to get a new TV is my motto). The larger Samsung's did not thrill me and I already had their curved and returned it. Our favorite sales associate took us over to the Sony TV's and WOW, we were like kids in a candy store, CHECK PLEASE, bought it right then and there! Finally, the TV arrived to their store and was delivered, mounted and set-up on Tuesday. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE our new 79 in 4k HD TV and wireless Sony subwoofer and CANNOT say enough about it, the folks at Sony, Best Buy and the Geek Squad. Thank you so much!

Rated 1 out of 5 by JimSatala worst mistake of my life
This TV Hasn't Functioned properly since it was delivered on July 1st 2014,
I have spent 30 hours on the phone with Sony Support and they don't know what to do... I purchased it directly from Sony that was a big mistake they are not set up to do service I was told to pay out of my pocket to ship it back and that would cost around $600.The TV keeps shutting itself off and rebooting and when it does the TV says it cant detect input signals and no matter what you do it wont work unless you shut off the TV and give it time to cool off then it will function for an hour or so..also WiFi on TV is really substandard it must have a defect in its RAM or Flash because if you are watching streaming video the tv lock up after 30 mins and reboots.

I wanted to love the 79X900B and did a lot of research on all of the 4K TVs 75" and up. I loved the design of the TV and the speakers rocked. The finish of this TV is outstanding. Colors are impressive and 4K content is truly stunning. Being an IPS panel and having passive 3D, I had high hopes for this TV and had it in my home for a week.
As far as 3D, it was a blurry mess and we tried multiple sources and BLU-Ray films. You also have to watch 3D dead center or you will see images outlined and blurred (So don't watch 3D if you are mounting this TV higher than eye level or it will look like you are not wearing the 3D glasses when in fact you are).
Black levels were very poor, actually grey and not anywhere near black (I would describe it as asphalt grey watching any source or content).
I had a dead pixel on the screen and severe light bleed 8 inches up the left side of the panel and the entire top right corner. It was very noticeable unless we were watching a bright scene. When we watched something in letterbox, the light bleed was a true eye sore. I called Sony before I returned the TV and they said light bleed and dead pixels are not covered under warranty and they are normal in their production process. I was considering trying another set but that response forced me to return the TV and go with another brand.
The reviews on all of the other size X900Bs are great but this 79" unit should not have been launched. The back-lighting seemed as if a floodlight was being held behind a film strip and local dimming didn't help much.
I consider myself somewhat technical and we tried multiple settings with very little improvement. It was suggested that we turn the back light down to 2 and Eco to High but that was just too dark for normal viewing and only an an attempt to hide the sets weaknesses.
Perhaps I got a bad panel but other reviews are similar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Ted99 Great Interim Set
Bought this set as a fill-in while waiting for an 85" OLED to become available at a real-world price in a few years. Audited many in stores and felt the Sony had the best upscaling. This is most important because it'll be a few years before 4K material is widely available. I also wanted a large screen and after looking at 1080p 85" screens in Costco, I decided that they were unwatchable.
I wanted a 4K set that would be able to show 4K content for the next several years and the Sony met all those criteria. It is 4K. Netflix and Amazon 4K requires HDCP 2.2 and the Sony has that. It has the "lite" version of HDMI 2.0, which means it can only pass 4K at a maximum of 30 frames per second. But, all currently-available film-based movies are shot at 24 frames per second so this is enough. In the future, video-based movies will be 60 frames per second, but they will be backwards compatible to this set.
The set is an 8-bit IPS panel, which means it can reproduce all the colors from the current video standard, but not the full range of colors that the human eye can see and which will be available in displays a few years from now. Being an IPS panel, it has a wider viewing angle, but slightly lower performance on blacks. This means that the Sony doesn't show pure black, but instead a very dark grey. My set did this when I got it, but after a professional calibration, it does a much better job of showing closer to pure black. This set does a beautiful job of upscaling video and I see many details that were probably there on a smaller screen, but couldn't be seen because of the small screen size. There is none of the watchability and fuzzy picture problems I saw with an 85" 1080p set.
My wife particularly liked the side speakers. They are very good and give a very sleek appearance. I hooked up my existing powered subwolfer (definitely needed) to the set--did not need to buy the Sony wireless sub.
In short, this is an excellent set that will serve for several years before it will require upgrading. It will be able to show video from the upcoming 4K Blu-ray DVD media. It will not show all of the colors that will be in that standard, but will still be better than anything currently available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by UbarWolfie Oustanding Colors; Easy NetFlix & Skype functions
Have been an XBR fan for years, and the Reality Pro chip deliver phenomenal colors. Blacks have improved and are very good -- it's only when compared to the top line 950B that this TV underpeforms slightly (but it's $17,000 less than the 84". I emphazise slightly because you can discern different black tones very well and if you don't have the other TV next to you, you won't notice. But regarding colors, I don't think any other TV can deliver colors this real and so vivid. 10 out of 10.
One buys a big screen 4k TV in order to get a very high quality image on a big size display, and with this TV Sony is at the top of the market. Movies look outstandingly good; been watching House of Cards on 4k and it looks amazing! Other Blu-Ray and HD content also looks outstanding.
UPCONVERSION: this is what buyers should focus on, as there aren't that many programs in 4k. This TV upscales your HD context from 1080i I get in Comcast or 1080p on Blu-Ray to levels that I hadn't seen before on my previous XBR TV. So it's worth buying a 4k TV now because movies will look better in this TV set. I think Sony delivers the best upconversion.
The speakers deliver very good sound across the range.
I had a 7.1 home theater system, but with these new speakers sometimes I don't even bother if its to watch just a short amount of time
Reading some previous comments, it appears that one person's TV could've been damaged during transport -- there is no bleeding and not a single pixel damaged on mine. Big size: Yes... do check that it will fit on your current media unit, by measuring it and comparing it to the Specs -- I do not recommend moving the legs to the middle as it doesn't look as nice. If your TV will go on a second floor, I recommend getting the special delivery and Installation because it's very heavy -- got this for free from Sony #ask nicely#.
Finally: i got two great surprises
NetFlix - the remote has a dedicated button and in two clicks you're watching your movie/series. Streaming speed is super fast and I connected directly to the router --I don't use the Apple TV anymore for this. Quality is fantastic. The TV remote controls the NetFlix Play, Back, forward functions easily.
Skype: I remember the Epcot exhibit when you were video conferencing in TV full screen with family or friends. This is just like this - there is difference between sitting in a sofa with the family and being in front of a monitor. It works really well and the camera is integrated and Hi-Res. This is not new technology, but if you're changing a Tv that it's two years old or more it's a nice feature to have.
Haven't tried 3D yet.
Very pleased with this purchase -- highly recommeneded.

This TV is over the top excellent. The picture is bright, sharp, and crisp. We use it to watch TV, Netflix, and as a monitor for the gaming computer. Playing video games in 3D like Tomb Raider is fantastic. We run the HDMI cable output through the sony STR -DN1050 amplifier which auto upgrades the signals to 4K, it's excellent. Only one minor problem, after switching devices a few times from computer to Netflix and TV the audio return channel stopped sending audio to the amplifier. We had to unplug the TV for a minute and reconnect. Only has happened twice since getting the unit in August. In one word, this TV is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by boed Side speakers killed the sale
I have a 65" 4k Sony currently. The TV is pretty good but I want something bigger so I was going to move the 65 to another room and get the 78" 4K Sony. While the motion still doesn't compete with plasma it is adequate on this model. The only problem is the massive side speakers take up a lot of space and make this unit stick out significantly from the wall. It also makes the unit heavier, limiting the number of TV mounts you can use. Seriously, who buys a 4K 78" TV and doesn't have a receiver or preamp and better speakers?
