Rated 5 out of 5 by starcentral Nothing here to disappoint
The STRDN1040 is a truly amazing AV receiver/amplifier that leaves nothing to disappoint. It can up convert signals from older equipment to HDMI if you need it and can even allow HDMI signals to "pass through" if you want to leave the amp off and just pass through your AV signal directly to your TV. I bought this at the same time as a Sony LED 50" Bravia and couldn't be happier with everything offered in this amplifier. It has 7 HDMI inputs yet still offers analog RCA and component inputs if you need it. Also the built in WI-FI is a plus for connecting to other sources of media, and the menu is high quality like something you would expect from Sony, not some cheap pixelated menu. Too much to list about this amp... enjoy it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by cw22 Very good receiver but humming noise is anoying
Overall I am very satisfied with the STRDN1040. The only downside is, that it emits a humming noise when it is switched on, my old Dennon receiver was not that noisy.
I guess this noise is caused by the power supply, Sony should be able to design and deliver something that is more quiet.
The sound quality and features of the device are excellent

Rated 4 out of 5 by Flulu Good device - what I was expecting
After using my receiver for almost 2 months, I can say that it is a good device. The sound quality is what i was expecting and it integrates well with the other Sony products I own, thanks to Bravia sync. It is feature pack and everyone of them so far works as promised by Sony.
On the negative side the remote control should be simplified as it is too complicated for most people. The worst part is the iOS app. It is terrible and needs tons of improvements. It is currently at version 2.2 and I was expecting something more stable. In fact it hardly does anything it is suppose to do. I can only hope that it is a work in progress. For now the app is not even worth trying.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Hajmi 2 Zone Pretty Much Useless. Go for 840 instead
Bought it because my old receiver is dying. Bought it with the idea I can hard wire it out to my speakers in the back yard like I used to. No A/B speaker function so thought 2 zone would do. Should have done more research as not only does one need a 2nd receiver to run the 2nd zone and very few inputs can pass through to the 2nd zone.
I like the Wi/Fi and interface function so will keep it. Also got it on sale so returning it and paying for the 840 at this time isn't worth it. Will solve the problem by spending an additional $50 - $100 on a speaker switching bar.
Bought it at the Sony store and very disappointed with the lack product knowledge by the sales staff. They were supposed to contact me with a potential solution. I gather their isn't one outside of a switch bar, (Sony doesn't carry), so they are avoiding contact in hopes of the return time will run out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by injurylawyer Best Bang for the buck.
I had a similar Onkyo that literally sparked and caught fire...it was only a few hours old. I use to have an Onkyo and did not have any problems but when researching it, I noticed there were more and more complaints in recent years and I was not the only one with the problem I had on the model I purchased. So, I needed a replacement.
Looking on line and at the local BestBuy, there was no other model that matched the number of features of the STR-DN1050. Reviews were good and I have been otherwise very happy so far.
The only issues is the "smart" features are less than some of the other brands (less online services). Also, at times, I will loose the picture for a couple of seconds although it always comes back. Not sure if it is a U-Verse issue with the DVR or an HDMI glitch with the receiver.
Otherwise, it has the easiest and most user friendly display and is packed with features at what comparable units would typically charge more for.
Since the firmware is updated via the internet, perhaps any glitches are software issues that can be incorporated/fixed with the next update.

Rated 5 out of 5 by soundman576 Great Receiver but has some issues
Once you get it set up its a great product (BUT) I have a D-TV sat box and I tried ALL THE CODES in the dn-1040 instruction manual including the ones for the other products under sat top boxes (p122) with no success to program my HR24-500 Receiver with the RM-AAP102 Remote that came with the STR-DN1040 I called sony and they struck out (The person on the sony help line was very professional and did her very best to help me)
The only thing left for me is to upgrade my sat box and hope the new one is programmable with the remote and the sony a/v receiver.
This receiver cost more than expected (I:m RETIRED) but on the other hand in the long run its better to spend the extra 100.00 and not be disappointed later after the initial cost. This receiver has more bells and whistles than I'll ever figure out how to use. I'm a little disappointed that it fell short on the programmable code section. Other than that its a great product and it sounds better than I ever heard before with the sony woofer, and the 3 front sony speaker system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by tcviper The all in one Receiver that just works
After having owned a STR-DA5600ES for years it was time to search for an upgrade and usually I would only go for another ES series from Sony but when I saw the specs of the 1040 and the addition of Airplay plus the amazing new GUI I was sold immediatelly.
Now, a month later, I have to say I simply love the device, everything just works it is fast, intuitive and plays everything you throw at it.
Doesn't matter if its through Airplay (IOS), DLNA or vTuner or the Sony Entertainment Network it all just works and that is exactly what I was looking for after all those years.
Thank you so much for this Sony, great job!

Rated 5 out of 5 by MusicLover1 WOW!!!!!
Over 35 years of home audio and it took Sony to get it right!!!! This receiver can be Bi-amped and with my Polk towers, I need it. I love the ease of use and the many features. The look, though not delicate, is very appealing and brawny looking. The one thing I hate about not only this receiver but almost all receivers built today is the power ratings. This one says its rating at 165 watts, more like 85-90@ 8ohms...Why do these companies do this? The standard for years was 8ohms, now it is 4-6ohms and apparently distortion ratings mean nothing anymore. Besides this complaint, I have nothing bad to say about the 1040 and would recommend it to anyone
