Rated 4 out of 5 by muzklvr The sound is INCREDIBLE. The operation? Eh ...
Another review mentioned that this unit brought new life to old speakers. But it wasn't the unit alone that did this. It was the unit with it's compatible sub-woofer. Let me tell you ... WOW. I mean, really ... WOW. I haven't enjoyed my music like this in a long time. But the HDMI pass-through function seems lame. Maybe I expect too much. I'm thinking it's 2015, and there are a lot of people graduating from colleges and tech schools with excellent programming skills. SONY couldn't afford top notch designers and programmers? For the HDMI pass-through to work, you have to turn on the unit and select the output, then turn it off again. I mean, I don't need to hear the news at 5.1 or 7.1. And then the audio interface for playing music over the network? Horrible. I should really give this three stars, but it just sounds so dang great! But I digress. The audio interface ... the lettering just sits there, burning itself onto the TV. No screen saver? No SONY logo bouncing around? Couldn't find a programmer to do that? And if I want to play a song by Prince or Radiohead, or the song "Stairway to Heaven?" ... I have to scroll through the As, the Bs, the Cs, the Ds, the Es, the Fs, ad infinitum. Having said that, well, I should really give this thing two stars. But it sounds SO GREAT! They really nailed the sound. Everything else? Not so much. (Don't get me started on how much "fun" I had connecting the speakers. I shoulda went wireless ...)

Rated 4 out of 5 by nurbles Best I've bought (so far...)
My first two home theater receivers were from Pioneer and though they were good, this Sony is better. My only real issue with it is the weakness of the built-in USB music player. The QUALITY of the music is better than anything else I have that plays MP3 files. Period. But I ripped ALL of my CDs to a single USB stick (somewhere just over 1000 songs) and the player will only recognize to somewhere in the 'M's (sorted alphabetically.) Couple that with the necessity of selecting SHUFFLE ON *EVERY* *SINGLE* *TIME* I start the player, and I see a weak player.
I'd hoped the recent firmware update might improved the player, but after the shock of the unit appearing to be dead for over 10 minutes during the update process, I cannot see any difference in the USB music player.
Hopefully Sony will see this and consider improving the player in the next firmware update. At least make the preferences "sticky" -- and maybe "remember" which song was last played and pick up there on reactivation, too!

Rated 3 out of 5 by ageek Sound is great, but has problem with standby
This AV receiver is able to reproduce a excellent sound. come with wifi and Bluetooth and lots of other feathers. setup is easy and gui interface is good. I like this receiver except the following issue.
But I found it has some issues, hope Sony can fix it through updating firmware.
1.The critical issue is HDMI pass through standby, it actually doesn't go to standby. I found the box is still heating up at this standby mode, measured with a power meter, the power consumption is about 40 W at HDMI pass through standby mode which is almost the normal operation power. So the receiver is never go to standby at this mode, this will reduce the box life time.
2.Another issue is turn of TV power will turn off AV receiver power. This is not reasonable, why I can not turn off TV while I listen to music? This issue has a workaround which is setting HDMI control off. But this setting disable all HDMI control related function. For this issue, Denon AVRS900W doing better. It uses a "power off" menu option to select whether turn off the box power when turn off TV power.

Rated 1 out of 5 by StephenfromTulsa Very disappointed
I am very disappointed in this product, especially the lack of competent technical support. The user manual is so vague and over-simplified that it fails to address any issues that a user might have when attempting to connect to several different components. The unit is not working properly, and the remote control appears to be malfunctioning. It will not allow me to even search for a radio station, and nothing displays on my TV screen. After calling Sony several times, I was on hold ETERNALLY, and after speaking with several support representatives, no one was able to provide any useful information. In fact, I am STILL on hold, and I have a unit that will NOT work. I feel that I have been stuck with an expensive product that is failing to function properly, and I feel that I am left on my own to fix this mess. I WAS a loyal Sony customer until today. Now, I am reconsidering my whole position with regard to Sony products and support.

Rated 4 out of 5 by AmericanTrooper Would give this 5 stars, but only fair AM coverage
Okay, I love this product. Great smart receiver, and great sound. I don't use the AM and FM antennas it comes with, but with one of the top-of-the-line outdoor AM/FM HD antennas on the market. My antenna can receive very distant AM and FM stations, but it requires a good tuner to play it on. Now I know that it's not the fault of the antenna for not getting the distant AM channels (and about 95%, not 100% of FM), for I did extensive research. I also know from what I read that AM is not really a priority for pretty much all companies who make A/V receivers. FM is great, but not perfect. I guess the excuse is that the reason AM is often overlooked is because not too many listen to AM in their homes, but that doesn't help people like me who spent a lot of money on both this and an expensive outdoor AM/FM HD antenna and are enthusiasts. To me not spending enough time on any feature isn't an excuse. I still have plenty of other options, like the Pandora and TuneIn smart features and the SiriusXM radio I have hooked up to it, but I request that all future A/V receivers by Sony have the best AM and FM while still being smart with features like Pandora and TuneIn. They future models should remain 4K and 3D compatible too. Adding SiriusXM Internet Radio and iHeart Radio as part of the smart features would be nice too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Coto Excellent. 5.1 and 7.2 much improved
I replaced a slightly older Sony 7.1 receiver with this one. The separation of sounds through each speaker whether listening to an SAD or DTS CD or DVD and movies and TV with Dolby sound is so much better on this receiver. You can clearly hear individual sounds from the surround sound coming from the back speakers in 5.1 or the additional speakers for 7.2. It connects to your mobile device to play any music program videos using Bluetooth or wifi, streams music directly if you download Pandora or other streaming apps and connects to folders on your network connected computers and also updates it's firmware over your Internet connection. Great AV receiver. 6 HDMI in and 3 HDMI out. Setting software displays on TV to customize everything manually or automatically setup type, distance and number of speakers automatically using included microphone placed in the center of your room. You can apply many types of sound effects and a lot more. 2 years parts and labor which includes speaking to live tech support for the full 2 years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by dave1010 Great Receiver zero support
The receiver was easy to set up and plenty of power to push all of our speakers. the only thing missing was RCA jacks for turn table. We will be upgrading soon to 4k TV and then we will see what this system can do. Tech support is rude, not knowledge and lied to us on so many levels.. We had to upgrade from the 1040 because it did not work right of the box 3 times. Sony did not care if we would buy from them or not!

Rated 1 out of 5 by AndyYYC A very good hardware with limited connectivity
This receiver is like a world champion athlete without legs. A very good hardware with no or limited connectivity is useless.
It has a USB inlet but you cannot connect it to a PC.
Wireless card is 2.4 MHz and so slow that you cannot transmit high quality signal through it.
The wired network card is not even at 10 Mbps, so is even slower than wireless.
Hey guys, you shall put some connectivity to a device if you want to give the possibility to be used. You know? The World does not gravitates only around HDMI and BRAVIA, there are other things out there, go out and see.
