Rated 4 out of 5 by nurbles Best I've bought (so far...)
My first two home theater receivers were from Pioneer and though they were good, this Sony is better. My only real issue with it is the weakness of the built-in USB music player. The QUALITY of the music is better than anything else I have that plays MP3 files. Period. But I ripped ALL of my CDs to a single USB stick (somewhere just over 1000 songs) and the player will only recognize to somewhere in the 'M's (sorted alphabetically.) Couple that with the necessity of selecting SHUFFLE ON *EVERY* *SINGLE* *TIME* I start the player, and I see a weak player.
I'd hoped the recent firmware update might improved the player, but after the shock of the unit appearing to be dead for over 10 minutes during the update process, I cannot see any difference in the USB music player.
Hopefully Sony will see this and consider improving the player in the next firmware update. At least make the preferences "sticky" -- and maybe "remember" which song was last played and pick up there on reactivation, too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by kandarch completely met expectations
Purchased this to replace a much more expensive, 8 year old Sherwood Newcastle surround sound receiver. Maybe it's just improved technology, but this new Sony sounds better - I'm hearing things from my speakers I've never heard before (good things!) - and it is so much easier to use. A fraction of the cables for input and output (thanks to HDMI).

Rated 1 out of 5 by StephenfromTulsa Very disappointed
I am very disappointed in this product, especially the lack of competent technical support. The user manual is so vague and over-simplified that it fails to address any issues that a user might have when attempting to connect to several different components. The unit is not working properly, and the remote control appears to be malfunctioning. It will not allow me to even search for a radio station, and nothing displays on my TV screen. After calling Sony several times, I was on hold ETERNALLY, and after speaking with several support representatives, no one was able to provide any useful information. In fact, I am STILL on hold, and I have a unit that will NOT work. I feel that I have been stuck with an expensive product that is failing to function properly, and I feel that I am left on my own to fix this mess. I WAS a loyal Sony customer until today. Now, I am reconsidering my whole position with regard to Sony products and support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BillinSRQ Great AVR
I've never owned a Sony AVR before. MY Harmon Kardons were outdated so I went looking at Denon, Harmen Kardon, Onkyo, and Yamaha. None came close to all the features I was looking for. I chose the Sony AVR and it was so easy to install and user friendly. It's not the watts but the amps that count and this drives my high end speakers as I would expect from an AVR at this price level. I would recommend that others try this AVR out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by TexAggie1994 Does Everything I Need
First unit had a failure within first few days, this happens sometimes with electronics. Swapped it for new one and have used it daily for a month with no issues. This unit does run a little hot in the cabinet. I like the dual zone feature so that I can pipe music to the speakers outside the house and still use the unit for theatre surround sound inside. The remote is easy to use and the onscreen features are neat.

Excellent sound reproduction, easy to set up, we have it connected to our 4K TV and the video picture via the auto upgrade to 4K is awesome. Great brain for our home theater!!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by speeddts STR-DN 1050 After 1 Month
I would consider myself a user of moderate ability, I am not an audiophile but try my best to utilize the feature sets of this receiver. I am very happy with my purchase and selection of this receiver.
I have owned the STR DN 1050 for a almost 2 months (May 2014). I bought the STR DN 840 for my parents a year earlier. Being very happy with my previous purchase The STR DN1050 obviously has a lot more features and connectivity options.
- Easy to use
- Feature set, connectivity options, wifi, bluetooth, airplay, 7.2,, 6 hdmi in and 3 hdmi out (which is excessive),
- Support is top notch, Sony technical support is available 24/7 and are very patient.
-Plasma TV with Wifi
- Playstation 3
- Playstation 4
- Cable box
The Sony remote is very intuitive it turns both the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 when you press the input
I ask the Sony tech team please correct/address/update via software update):
- TV input setting via ARC currently does not function correctly:
a) -> Home --> Settings --> HDMI Settings --> Audio Out. When you select AMP and try to change it to TV+AMP, the setting does not stay in place after your turn off the receiver. I have to go into the settings every time and change it again. This function allows you to use the TV input and have tv sound via the receiver. It is annoying that I have to go back and change it every time. Yes you can use SAT/CATV but why offer the TV input if it doesn't function correctly
b) Home --> Settings --> System Settings --> Auto Standby OFF
- when you select auto standby off, the receiver still enters standby mode. This should only happen if Auto Standby is On, not OFF.
c) remote does not fully replace tv and cable remotes.
So far those are the only two issues I have had so far. I hope Sony tech/product support can easily resolve them via software updates.
This receiver offers a lot of bang for the buck. I bought this receiver early in the new receiver line up releases. A powerful combination of connectivity, power, and ease of use/setup. There some serious competition for this receiver from Denon AVR-X1100W and X2100W , Marantz slimline 1605 yet the Sony is priced in between the two Denons, well below the Marantz and offers a high set of features/specs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JoeWilly3 Very worthwhile upgrade.
The main reason I had to upgrade from my old Pioneer AV Receiver, was the fact that I needed more than 2 HDMI inputs. I was getting by with connecting one of my sources with an optical audio input paired with a HDMI input direct to the TV , which created a confusing nightmare of having to use three remotes to change from one source to another. Solved completely with 4 HDMI inputs on the Sony.
In addition, loved the wi-fi connectability as well as the on screen GUI to set up and control the receiver settings. Much more simple and now my spouse can use the system without my help. BTW, my audio sounds GREAT!
