bought this unit to replace 7.1 channel Onkyo receiver that crashed. i was looking for adequate power to drive 2 B&W bookshelf speakers, a Velodyne powered subwoofer + 2 in-ceiling speakers for surround sound. As i live in an apartment, the volume i use is always moderate, but at those levels i want to get full sound, with good response from the subwoofer. the onkyo was difficult to set and always had to increase the volume to "catch" the subwoofer and then lower it slowly...this sony does it effortlessly, with great quality sound at low volume levels. the remote is simple to use. currently i have a turntable, a blue ray dvd player, a cd player, an Apple TV and a dvr from the cable company attached to the avr and everything is working as intended. Why not a 5 star rating? sony includes bluetooth with the next model, a 7.1, not this one and i would have appreciated a couple more HDMI or optical connectors. just recommended the unit to a friend yesterday!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Markuis great receiver but...
This worked great for what I needed but the receiver goes back to TV mode when I turn it back on. Kinda annoying that I have to get up and find the receiver remote and switch it back to Sat/cable mode every time.

After about 4 months of use, I am very happy with this receiver. I'm running a DVD payer, Direct TV sound, a turntable (with its own pre-amp) and a Wii with HDMI adapter through it, and they all work great and sound fabulous. I use it for listening to MP3s thru the front USB jack also. Very nice! I have a great pair of vintage Pioneer speakers for fronts, a Polk Audio center channel speaker and a pair of Polk Audio flush mounts in the ceiling for rears. Recently added a Pyle 12-inch Sub run off a 150 watt plate amp in the ceiling. Now I can rock the house at real rock concert volume and the sound is tight and undistorted. Great for movies, music, Wii games or standard TV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Scallopeye2 SONY 5.2 Ch A/V Receiver does what its well
Bought this to power in-wall Dolby 5.1 speakers in the new house. Easy set up. Like the SONY "tie-in" with other products that are SONY. For example, we have a SONY Blu-Ray and TV. One press turns them on if watching a DVD movie. So, staying with the SONY "system" has been a reward. Once in a while I'll experiment but can usually get back to what I've set up pretty easily. Wish I had bought the higher model w/ built-in Wi-Fi & Bluetooth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by DonWA Meets our needs
We were looking for a simple receiver with enough HDMI inputs for our other electronics (Blu-Ray, cable box, etc). We found this receiver and are very happy with it. It is extremely easy to set up and the sound is much better than our old receiver. The only quirk is the pass-through feature. If we watch something on the Blu-Ray without the receiver on, when we turn off the Blu-Ray we get no TV reception until we turn the receiver on, set the input to cable box and turn the receiver off. Then everything works just fine. Its annoying but that is the only thing I wish Sony would correct on this receiver. Otherwise its all good!

I buy Sony products exclusively for the quality and excellent customer service. Customer service for me is more important than anything, and Sony won my heart over 30 years ago when they took care of my problem lickety split, no hassle.
I needed a 5 CD carousel player, and they searched for a great set up for me. I am thrilled. I am an insomniac, so I get audiobooks, put in five, and it plays all night long, like having someone read me a bedtime story, all night long. Mechanics are close to silent, so you don't hear CD's changing. Delivery was very speedy All in all, I am a very happy Sony customer for life.

Rated 1 out of 5 by notv Very Disappointed!
Unit is used in a surround sound system. Sony TV, Sony Blu-Ray, and Comcast cable box are all hooked to receiver using HDMI cables.
When channel is changed from a Hi Definition channel to a low definition channel the receiver will shut off. Sometimes it will come back on in a few seconds, sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes never.
Sony's only advice is to unplug unit for 60 seconds.
Receiver is clearly defective. It does not communicate properly with the other devices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by joey1127 Respectable 5.2 channel receiver
Receiver does a good enough job of delivering the impact and detail one would expect from high resolution audio formats. The FM tuner leaves a little to be desired, but none-the-less, it does it's job. Overall, if you have a BluRay player of TV with networking already (Wi-Fi), this is a GREAT non-networked receiver and will perform well above it's modest price tag!
