by fldef Sony server works after tech visit
As an early adopter, I was unaware that I would require scheduling "white glove 4K server setup". That said, they came and replaced the HDMI 4 port card (see photo) with version 2.2 on schedule and we were up and running! No snags, and they knew what they were doing. The shorts provided are of better quality than that of the actual movies? Maybe they aren't true 4K? A concern here is that the Sony gal seems to indicate perhaps another visit is required to realize the 4K download service??? I hope I'm wrong.
4K server works flawlessly as advertised !

Rated 2 out of 5 by RocketJSquirrel Great expectations not fulfilled
What a disappointing product.
I got only one (1) free movie, Elysium. Apparently the offer of several free movies expired in December 2013.
I did get plenty of uninteresting 2-4 minute demo clips that are just taking up space.
For some reason, 1.7 TB out of 2 TB are in use, and I haven't downloaded anything yet. There is no indication how to specify what will be deleted when I want that space for some movies. All I can find is a trash can icon on each video. It will take a long time to manually delete the unwanted videos one at a time.
Movies are overpriced at around $30 to buy.
The $7 rentals must be viewed within 24 hours of purchase, and take hours to download, so you really need to plan ahead and plan precisely. This is really stupid. Give me 24 hours from the time I press Play!
So far, all the 4K videos I've viewed are in 16:9 format, so they don't fill my 2.35:1 projection screen.
And, of course, you only get the very limited selection that Sony offers.
The FMP-X1 could be great. The disappointments are not technical in nature; the hardware is fine. Sony could make this product better by improving movie selection, lowering purchase prices, and making the rental policy more liberal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Ultra4kFTW When it's all said and done...
After having purchased the Ultra HD TV I decided in order to get the most out of it and actually experience what I paid so much for, I'd need to also purchase the Media Player.
Once I purchased it, I of course had to wait for the obligatory modification to my TV before I could watch it. That took a month due to having to wait on an available tech and then waiting on the parts to arrive. (Sony said it was the contractors fault and the contractor says it was Sony. I didn't care, they're the same to me.)
Once that was done and I was "live" and actually playing 4k content, I really enjoyed seeing it at that resolution. Definitely worth the cost of entry.
The Media Player itself? It's all about content and there are some movies available. Some free and most at $30.
New movies being added to the library seem to take forever. They're available on iTunes well in advance of Sony offering it. I waited and waited willing to spend the extra money for the 4k format. Then, finally gave up and purchased it from iTunes as HD.
Sony, if you want to really make this work, get content online available as it becomes available on competitive sites like iTunes. Otherwise, we're turning blue waiting on you and will give up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Flyshacker A glimpse of a great service to come!
This new 4K media server offers a glimpse of the incredible picture that your new 4K TV can produce and gets you ready to download the new 4K content as soon as it becomes available. This is what makes the purchase worthwhile. (The only other very limited 4K content I have found available is on YouTube.) This media server ships with quite a few short 4K videos, originated in 4K, that are truly spectacular and make me eager for more 4K originated content ASAP!! However, we also tried one full-length Hollywood movie, and it appeared merely upscaled to 4K resolution, unfortunately not nearly as clear and awesome as the short videos that are originated in 4K. For me, the promise of this media server and this new service is entirely in new originated 4K content, not in upconverted material.
The media server is plug-n-play and works perfectly out of the box, with one exception that lowers my rating to 4 stars from 5. I am having a compatibility issue from the HDMI2 audio port to a third-party sound bar, and I believe I have isolated the problem to the media server. I have contacted support and fully expect the problem to be resolved to my satisfaction, perhaps with a firmware upgrade if it turns out that I am correct. When that is fixed I will post an update and raise my rating to a full 5 stars.

Rated 2 out of 5 by JJB9 Very Disappointed
For what this device costs it's appealing how lousy the free content is. The device is slow, takes forever to download movies even on a hard wired 100mbps connection and, there is an overall lack of movies. As neat as it is to be able to watch 4k content, the library available to me can be watched in a month or two. Unless this device improves through updates etc I am considering it a complete waste of money. Sony, I'm sorry, this was not your best effort.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Grunt1970 Don't Buy!
This is an expensive piece of hardware that I have added to my system. The preloaded films are from one to five minute glamor shots, worthless value. Each movie is about $30 and takes several hours to download. You are better off getting the 4K up-loader on a blue ray device. Very disappointed in Sony.

Rated 1 out of 5 by meeek28 Horrible Product!
Do not purchase this product! There are audio output issues with certain AV receivers. Just got off phone with Sony Support and they are aware that the HDMI2 output for audio to a surround sound system does not work with Pioneer, Pioneer Elite, McIntosh and Integra receivers, to name a few. There is no firmware update to fix this. And the 10 free movies that were included when I first looked at this product are a thing of the past. They are now giving them away free with huge discounts on 4K TVs. In my opinion, Sony has become an also-ran amount the industry leaders and this product just shows how far they have fallen.

I just got this along with a 4k 65" Sony tv. The audio on this media player doesn't work.. or cuts out every few seconds. #my fix? hit rewind on the tv remote 20-25 times and you may get lucky and the audio will stay on#.
Also.. this thing cannot make it through one movie without resetting 5-8 times. Unacceptable.
Actually embarrassing when neighbors/friends want to see the new 4k stuff.
I'm a die hard Sony guy.. but I gotta tell you.. i'm about done with Sony.. NO fixes..
Bought it all at bestbuy on 05/11/14.. hasn't worked correctly since.
TV works fine.. hooked up correctly.. fmp-x1 hdmi to hdmi 4 on tv. fmp-x1 hdmi 2 to Yamaha receiver for audio. #Yamaha RX-775WA 4k#.
Sony needs to seriously reach out and make this right.. none of these items were cheap, and they shouldn't leave their loyal customers hanging like this.
IF.. something changes and Sony makes this right... I will change this review.
