Rated 3 out of 5 by CableShark Don't expect it to be a good Media Player
I was using Boxe BOX and Apple TV for my medial streaming , and I have a NAS at home with all my movies.
I was hoping it to be a good media player along with a good Blue ray player.
very bad when playing MKV , will play some MKV over USB connection, but Over the Network even with Cat5e MKV fail to play.
What ever it plays, picture and Sound quality is excellent, better then any media player I have tested. I would give 5 Starts when it comes to sound and Video quality. I never thought there would be such a big difference..
This Blue Ray player exceed picture and sound quality on following application .
1- Playing Blue Ray disk
2 - Netflex ( lot better when it comes to sound quality as compared to Apple TV or Boxe box.)

Device is good for LCD TV but lacks merit for a good plasma TV. The S480's picture (for example) is much more believable. Image processing makes the picture a synthetic (plastic), but many people love the Oppo's vulgar image with "Marvel", and S790 will certainly find a lot of fans.
Adjustable sharpness (texture remastering) on screenshots

by johnny56 need improvement big time
from what i hear a firmware upgrade means death of your player update it and it will break as well glitches when it comes to wireless internet and trouble when it comes to using apps like Netflix and so fourth. if you have to buy a unit go with someone else and comeback to sony in a few years when the glitches are gone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by techmaster an amazing machine
great machine it makes my blu-ray and standard dads look ten times better than i have ever seen them than i did with the other units i had i owned a panasonic a samsung flagship and a sharp and they were all top of the line units but they don't come close to this unit and weird thing is i don't know why but it does which is great my blu-ray and standard dvds closer than ever like blu-ray and my blu-rays like 4k with my 1080p hx929 54 or 55 inch model from sony if i'm not wrong wow and to keep like that keep it up to date is my date if you get it and sound quality of the unit is just as good and main menu and setup is a breeze to use and do. they got the wireless internet glitches and all the issues which last years unit had so you would get best sound and picture possible 4k makes it future ready so you wouldn't need to get another one for years to come injoy have fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by FranklinMint Excellent complement to a Sony 3D HDTV
This is my 5th Sony Blu-ray player. They have gotten better with each new player. This player is no exception. Video quality is greatly improved with 16 bit processing. Much better than it's predecessor, the BDP-780. When playing a Blu-ray disc, the player automatically selects the best audio CODEC for your audio set-up. The new Netflix interface is similar to the Nintendo Wii and is much faster when loading content via WiFi. Web streaming is vastly improved and quite noticeable on Netflix. Netflix video resolution now approaches 1080P with outstanding 5.1 audio. Sony has again added more Internet widgets over the previous model, BDP-780. DLNA works well, but still doesn't decode Apple's audio format, AAC, on iTunes. DLNA works well with most popular video formats. It also plays Sony's video camera formats, however 1080P content from your Sony camera on your computer does not play smoothly over WiFi. The output 3D signal on HDMI now passes through the Bose Lifestyle V25 Home Theater System to a Sony 3D TV. This was seldom the case with the BDP-780. All-in-all, those upgrading from the BDP-780 will be pleased with the improved features of the BDP-790. These improvements are well worth the money spent on this new player.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CoachHomey DLNA Supprt
I bought this item a week ago and it plays DVD and Blu-ray very well, but the DLNA is lacking when streaming from Windows 7 or any DLNA server for that matter. There is no way to fast forward more then 3 seconds at a time in a movie that you are streaming. When streaming music from a DLNA server there is no selection for random playing like you have in the Sony TV models. When ending a movie or music from streaming the device takes you back to the main menu and you have to go through the list of all your movies or songs again instead of returning to the list at its place like the Sony TV models do. Basically the return button and the arrow buttons on the Blu-ray remote need to function just as the return and arrow buttons work on the TV remote when streaming directly to a Sony TV (KDL-40XBR9). Fix those minor problems and you would have the ultimate Blu-ray player.

Rated 5 out of 5 by lmbea4 An Awesome Blu-Ray/multimedia investment
I am very tech savi, and purchased this blu-ray direct from Sony. It arrived in a very timely manner and has worked flawlessly right out of the box. The internet enabled features work well and the android/apple app for tablets/phones integrates very well with the device. Enrolling all the services only takes a few minutes and was pretty painless. I can now enjoy all that blu-ray/dvd/media player/netflix/hulu/ect has to offer at the press of a button. It is quiet while operating and fast to load/play. All around a great purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by DPAirboat Great until it fails
I have loved Sony products for over 30 years and until recently given Sony a 10 out of 10, but their warranty has been the worst. Can't get in touch ot just plain egnored. I really like this BDP-S790, it sometimes does not play a DVD disc that others players in my home play, and now it stops, jumps and hesitates when playing DVD's, but still plays Blue Ray, what's up with that. I am having so much trouble trying to get warranty, and it runs out 09/19/2013. Less than a year old and trouble all ready. Time to go to another product.
